thankyou ninja for having sense.
even on a minibike, your still doing what. 60kmh+ ? my dodgey little chinese thing does 50 stock and this things been beaten up abit.
the MOST important piece of gear you have is your helmet, go wear a t shirt shorts and chinese work boots for all i care. You come off your bike you could break an arm and wear half your knee off but your head hits the pavement and straight off youve got brain damage at that speed. Hell if you fall over while standing still you can do yourself serious injury if you nail your head, add speed on your bike to that and youre not going to come out on top.
Any instances where people 'would have been better without the helmet' are either due to not properly wearing it or just really bad luck.
Then youve got to look after your helmet, you drop that from waist height you may as well go chuck it in the bin, its stuffed. No joke. I didnt even know that till recently as ive had mine for 3 yrs or so and nailed trees and fenceposts and all sorts of good things and sure it still works, doesnt look damaged, and it will work in most cases but when theres that one instance where you absolutely smash your head into a wall itll give out, and it wont be pretty. Theyre not something you should cheap on either, get 10 buck gloves and wear cross trainers if you want But dont buy a wallmart helmet lol :P
You may look at helmets in the shop and see price ranges anywhere from $100 up to 500 and you think "what gives"? they all have to meet a safety requirement right, so why not save 200? well the more expensive ones are alot better. They are made from better materials, are lighter, fit you better and are more comfortable, better cooling (definitely good) and they will protect you better as they take alot more care with quality then cheaper ones. my next one will be a 200-300 dollar range, because i dont know about you, but i like higher level conscious thought.
If getting your head whipped around when you hit the tar worries your with neck damage then get a neck brace or jacket that incorporates helmet stops so your head cant move past where it should. Go and ask any professional if you dissagree. IF you dont have the money then you should either save up, or find a different sport. Sure i take some shortcuts, i usually wear boots helmet and gloves.. but then have a t shirt and trackies on. but ive also suffered for that and also been quite lucky. ive broken my foot twice and shattered my knuckles and almost had my throat ripped out on a barbed wire fence.
But im telling you right now i. would. not. be here if i didnt have my helmet.
so use your head and think about that so you still can in 10 yrs time.
oh, and make sure you have fun
