Helmets Save Lives!!!!

Well it was dark last night and my mini bike and helmet were both behind my friends car when he deicided to leave..... As you can see in the pictures the damage isnt actually too bad on the bike, only the handle bars and cheap spedo were busted, but mainly because my 300$ kbc helmet was slighty in the way of the mini bike. Regarlesss if ur human or inantimate object, HELMETS WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE!!! (or most of it lol)... ah crap i cant find my palm disc so i can transfer the pics... guess yalls are gonna have to wait on those pictures.

Re: Helmets Save Lives!!!!

Where's the pic? I'm guessing the helmet is toast. It definately should be replaced.

$300 on a KBC helmet? Dam. I have a KBC viper(tk-77) that was used once (lives on top of my tv as a dust collector), I'm thankful it was a free. Hell it isn't even good enough to use as a passenger helmet.

Check out HJC's great helmets, I used a CL-11 at the track for a while and also a daily ride helmet for a year. Price was around $125. Night and day difference between the 2. It is soon to be replaced (still good just getting old) by an AC-12. Still going to use it for the mini's though.

No, helmets DO save lives. What good is your body w/out your head??? People wear the proper gear when riding (it doesn't matter if its a PB or a streetbike).

Well you can repair broken bones easier than brain damage. I mean Helmets isn't the only protection you should wear, but its the most important out of them b/c even though someone could live without a hand or some other appendage, limb or ect. you can't live without your head or your vital organs. Agreeable to some extent, but I think it be a freak accident if they were severed at the neck from an accident, even though its possible.

Re: Helmets Save Lives!!!!

True. On the other hand (just to play devil's advocate), helmets are made out of polycarbonate, the same stuff used in bowling balls. If you've never dropped a bowling ball, it bounces. Now, think of your head inside that bowling ball, merrily bouncing off the pavement and doing unspeakable damage to your neck and spinal cord .....

Just so you guys know where I'm coming from on this, I'm originally from California, where they had plenty of debates about the pros and cons of wearing a helmet or not. Yes, wearing a helmet in some cases can save your life. In other documented cases, if the rider had NOT been wearing the helmet, he would have lived. One of those cases was from a motorcyclist wearing a full-face helmet, who was thrown from his bike into a curb. The resulting impact with the curb jammed his mouthpiece down and back, forcing his head to bend down toward his chest. However, because he was wearing his helmet with the strap properly tightened under his chin, the strap torqued his neck forward, breaking it like a hangman's noose. The coroner later reported that he would have survived the accident if he had not been wearing his helmet.

Another reoccuring question at motorcycle accidents is "Was the rider wearing a helmet?" As if the helmet could somehow prevent a drunken driver from running a stop sign and plowing into the side of the guy's bike .... BUT he was wearing his helmet!

Helmets also limit your side-to-side vision and your hearing. (I realize now that modern helmets have improved on lessening these faults, but they still remain.) It is more difficult to hear what is going on around you while wearing a helmet than it is without one.

Please don't get me wrong - I am NOT anti-helmet. I am simply being fair and pointing out the opposite side of this discussion, because it is a part of what I learned when the mandatory helmet laws for California came into effect.

Spyguy you make a good point. I am personally debating what would be a good choice for myself. Personally if I was a motorist and drove the streets I would choice the full face. If one of the small rocks that get chucked around on the busy streets hits me in the face it would probably cause more of a problem without a full faced one with shatter proof visor.

Re: Helmets Save Lives!!!!

Yea helmets can bounce on pavement and other hard surfaces, that's basically impossible to come around. How would you construct a helmet to take an impact without bouncing or getting seriously deformed? =/

I'm aware of the risks and that you can get very unlucky and that wicked things can happen, but I choose to wear a helmet simply because it is more safe then not wearing it!

I crashed without helmet into a car once (I actually moved the car as my body slammed into it!) but I was lucky, I didn't get hurt except i smacked my lower leg on the mudguard and got my fingers ran over. (And FYI, the gloves saved the fingers and I didn't even break or scratch them.) But that's nothing. If I were to hit my head on the car (which I didn't) without a helmet then I could be dead today.
And if that didn't happen, I could be sitting here with 3-4 fingers less on the left hand. Just imagine how it would look with naked fingers between rough pavement and a car wheel.

So for me it's not a debate at all, the more protection you wear, the safer you are.

Re: Helmets Save Lives!!!!

Going cheap on a helmet is just simply foolish....even at the speeds we travel guys.....serious damage can occour in the event of an off.

my helmet is worth almost double my bike for good reason......it's protecting my brain.

Ride safe, have fun

Re: Helmets Save Lives!!!!

thankyou ninja for having sense.

even on a minibike, your still doing what. 60kmh+ ? my dodgey little chinese thing does 50 stock and this things been beaten up abit.
the MOST important piece of gear you have is your helmet, go wear a t shirt shorts and chinese work boots for all i care. You come off your bike you could break an arm and wear half your knee off but your head hits the pavement and straight off youve got brain damage at that speed. Hell if you fall over while standing still you can do yourself serious injury if you nail your head, add speed on your bike to that and youre not going to come out on top.
Any instances where people 'would have been better without the helmet' are either due to not properly wearing it or just really bad luck.
Then youve got to look after your helmet, you drop that from waist height you may as well go chuck it in the bin, its stuffed. No joke. I didnt even know that till recently as ive had mine for 3 yrs or so and nailed trees and fenceposts and all sorts of good things and sure it still works, doesnt look damaged, and it will work in most cases but when theres that one instance where you absolutely smash your head into a wall itll give out, and it wont be pretty. Theyre not something you should cheap on either, get 10 buck gloves and wear cross trainers if you want But dont buy a wallmart helmet lol :P
You may look at helmets in the shop and see price ranges anywhere from $100 up to 500 and you think "what gives"? they all have to meet a safety requirement right, so why not save 200? well the more expensive ones are alot better. They are made from better materials, are lighter, fit you better and are more comfortable, better cooling (definitely good) and they will protect you better as they take alot more care with quality then cheaper ones. my next one will be a 200-300 dollar range, because i dont know about you, but i like higher level conscious thought.

If getting your head whipped around when you hit the tar worries your with neck damage then get a neck brace or jacket that incorporates helmet stops so your head cant move past where it should. Go and ask any professional if you dissagree. IF you dont have the money then you should either save up, or find a different sport. Sure i take some shortcuts, i usually wear boots helmet and gloves.. but then have a t shirt and trackies on. but ive also suffered for that and also been quite lucky. ive broken my foot twice and shattered my knuckles and almost had my throat ripped out on a barbed wire fence.

But im telling you right now i. would. not. be here if i didnt have my helmet.
so use your head and think about that so you still can in 10 yrs time.

oh, and make sure you have fun
