89 YSR50 Thinking of buying

Ok been wanting a YSR50 or NSR50 since I bought my son his chinese x18 and has all the fun at the track. I found an 89 YSR50 for sale for $1100 but am trying to get the seller down to $800. It is currently not running because ad says the tank rusted inside and needs a new fuel valve but was running fine until then. Reading the forums here seems most like the Honda NSR 50 better, but have not found one yet. So what can I expect from this bike YSF? Everything is stock on it, is it going to be hard to find parts? Will it ride smoother than the X18? The X18 vibrates so hard at the track when I tried it, my hands were sore after. I wouldnt know what the YSF rides like since its not running. Thanks for the advice.

Re: 89 YSR50 Thinking of buying

Sounds like you plan on racing, or least tracking this YSR, right?

If correct, is this YSR you interested in race ready?

Race ready....has all the suspension (2nd fork spring, TCR upper triple clamp, TCR fork brace, Bronze bushing in the rear swing-arm, nylon bushing in the OEM rear shock or after-market rear shock), braking (SS line, Ferado or Galfer brake pads) and tire (Dunlop TT91's, Bridgestone Battle-ax, or IRC 750) upgrades.

Give us some details of the bike and motor.

A YSR will be more stable on the track vs the X18. But the power is going to be different, (YSR) 2-stroke vs (X18) 4-stroke. Keep in mind, a 2-stroke, you need to rely on corner speed, so when you exit, you're in the power band (assuming you're in the right gear) for a good drive out of the corner. The advantage of the 4-stroke is it's low end torque, which the 2-strokes lacks. 2-strokes power is in the mid and upper range of the motor.

And yes, the NSR is a far more superior bike than the YSR. Keep in mind, the YSR was produced as a entry level 2-stroke street bike, the 04 NSR was produced as a "race ready" bike. If your budget allows you to buy an NSR, do it!....vs a YSR

Re: 89 YSR50 Thinking of buying

almost pulled trigger on a ysf with team calamri pipe and front fork work, powder coated wheels and fox rear shock and new pirrelli tires. Also came with a 1970 ys80 motor that was ready to drop in, but after checking my account, the buy would put me in the red. But it was a killer price for $1300. I hated to let it slip by. Was that a mistake? I could have borrowed $$$ to get it.

YSRCali is right on with his post. As far as the 1970 YSR is concerned that is quite an old bike for $1300 and putting a ys80 motor in it if you are going to race is worthless. You will be stuck in a class with a bunch or modified TZ and Rs125's that have 80 cc motors in them and the YSR would probably get killed. I sent you a pm and mentioned putting a 4 stroke in a YSR and that would still need better suspension etc. to compete. I spent a lot of time and money on my X18 to get it track ready and it is just as stable as a YSR now but it took alot to get there. The NSR is the direction I would go over a YSR. Unless you are going to put a lot of work into a YSR or x18 then the NSR is the best fix but they wont come cheap!

Re: 89 YSR50 Thinking of buying

Seems like you have a tight budget.

Here's what I recommend. Inquire or go to your local track and see what is being raced, in the YSR and or NSR classes. More than likely, the club will have a "Stock" YSR classes. If so, buy a "Stock" race ready (with complete suspension upgrades) YSR......you should be able to find one within your budget (near $1000). For that price, the top-end should be fairly fresh (maybe 1 or 2 races, or completely fresh).

OR, if the club has a modified YSR class, and you find a YSR within your budget, then buy it. (Ensure that the top-end is either fresh or fairly fresh (couple of races).

Fwiw, you will not find an 04 NSR under $1500.00 (used). In fact, we have one near us for sale $1600....1 race on the top-end w/ fairly new tires.

Re: 89 YSR50 Thinking of buying

YSR Cali is dead on and knows of what he speaks (really good advice on all counts).

We have a guy we race with from Canada who has a 50lb weight advantage on a totally race ready modified YSR 50. It's a good bike with his mods, but it is just on par with bone stock NSRs. In addition, during the last quarter of a race it starts to become a heat casualty if he doesn't break contact enough.
