Well...Start with mylaps.com Talladega and see what that tells you. Do you guys follow lap times? Or just "wow that seems fast!" It will show you "non believers", that Jap bikes are the most bang for the buck!

I browsed the site link, but didn't find Talladega, only Mini TT Albergen. I went ahead and checked this group out. It only lists riders and does not say what type of bike the rider was on.
You guys happen to have any Video links of the two bikes battling it out?
Eddie,
I recall Tommy Aquino's lil bro races the basic M-kit in beginner class. Refresh my memory..... does Tommy race only the 72cc M-kit? I believe last year they brought up 3 M-kits, the basic, the 72cc 12" and the big wheel M-kit, tho' I don't know the cc's. It would be nice if they came up again to race now that we have, what, 4 NSR's this season? Anyways, it would be cool to See Tommy battle with Tom #44 and the other fast NSR rider (?).
fwiw, we've witnessed the NSR vs the Blinged out Derbi's and it is quite a competator.

Yep, that would be Ethan Ellis on a YZ85. Kris Hardy finished 3rd on a YZ85 after only practicing for 8 laps! Funny thing is, the mylaps.com only shows the Sat and Sun results. Ethan and Mike on his RM85 were turning low 109's in practice on Friday. Never broke a sweat on the weekend.

I remember that day very well. It was race #7 last season. Tommy's lil bro had the holeshot and held his position 'til the checkered flag. Me on the other hand had a bad start. Didn't realize I was on 2nd gear . Midpack out of 12 or so bikes, but managed to find my way to 3rd behind a modded RS50. Thank goodness for the longer mains.

A YZ125 or a GP125 is not in our future. I have an 04 R6, but at age 12, and 80 pounds I am a bit cautious. I stole an 03 CRF450 today at an auction for $1800 so I will probably set that up for the end of this year.
Fastest kid I know. He's just turned 11 and has no fear. He also won the junior motoX championship three years running. This is his first full year of roadracing. I'll be sponsoring him in a couple events when I get settled.
Where is the MotoX championship ran? Are you talking about Moto Cross? Where will this kid be racing? I ask because I'm in the North East and just bought a 72cc Metrakit for my son. he's been in some YSR races on borrowed bikes and won and has done quite well on Pocketbikes. We'll be taking him to his first WERA event in SC next week and are very intersted to get involved with as many kids as possible.

I asked too soon....before reading this whole thread, so I appologize.
I heard about Ethan and what he did on his YZ85 and I'm wonder something. I'm still new at this stage of racing so forgive me. I have a son who shows promise and wants to road race and I want to move him up the right way, but there's no real established way of progression for young ones to develop into road racers. Pocketbikes is a great start and all, but what's truely the next step for a 12 - 14 year old? I'm robbing Peter to pay Paul (so to speak) to put him on a Metrakit. With Finances being the way they are, I want to take the best route and I thought the Metrakit was the way to go....Metrakit against Metrakit. The bike is a little bit bigger and it's a roadracer.
My son has raced against Ethan on pocketbikes and he is a very tallented little rider and with Mike Smith in his corner, that's a good combination, so I wasn't surprised to hear that he went out and beat a Metrakit, but what class was that in? Was it an exhibition? What I was thinking was that I was buying a Metrakit to race against other Metrakits. Not knowing the reasoning behind the class structure (WERA), why would an 85cc bike be allowed to run against a 72cc? I'm expecting to pack up and drive from NY to SC next week for our first race and I guess I'm not sure what we're going to be running against. I understood this Metrakit bike was in a class by itself, essentially being a spec. race, where every kid is on the same bike, with limited modifications. To me this is the best way to see who the talented riders are, by putting them all on the same bike and leaving performance out of the equation. Anyone with a decent amount of skill can throw their leg over a "worked" bike and win......(not talking about Ethan here).
We got away from Pocketbikes because Corey seemed to be ready for his next step and races being run with WERA, it seemed that everything would be more organized and structured. I've scowered the minigp50cc website for some rules, but not sure what I'm looking for. I guess I would have been better off seeing what class these bikes fit into and bought the bike accordingly.

WERA has 2 classes for minis, 50cc and 80cc. In the 50cc class you can run up to a 65cc two stroke, or 125cc four stroke. In the 80cc class you can run up to an 85cc two stroke, and up to a 150cc four stroke. I am much like you in the sense that I do not have unlimited funds for Ethan's racing. I must therefore make every dollar count. We tried a Metrakit last year, and got tired of all of the problems. I switched to a KX65 in mid year and never looked back. Motocross bikes I have found are the closest thing to a real superbike geometry. The power is unsurpassed and the price is quite affordable! The YZ at Talladega is a stock 2005 model with 17" wheels and GP125 race slicks. The total cost is about $3600. It makes 29.75hp at the crank. A KX65 set up with Dunlop TT91's costs about $2600 fully set up ready to race. If you already have a Metrakit, use that for now when he outgrows it, you can always find a used 85cc bike to go to the next level. I guess we will see you in S.C. next weekend? You should also go to SEMRA.org That is a great organization for your son too. He can bang bars with Aaron Yates, Ted Cobb, James Stroud, Mike Smith, hopefully Scott Russell. Call me if you need to.

Thanks for the update Marc.....I guess I should have called you first, but since I have the bike, I'm going to make what I can of it and see what comes of it. Thanks again and we'll see you next weekend.

Good luck with the new ride, if it doesn't work out you can always find somebody who will buy a Metrakit, as there is still somewhat of a following for them. We will see you at CMP next weekend!
