NSR 50 Mods

I picked up a 2004 NSR 50 a few days ago and have a few questions. Iwould like the answers to quantify and qualify. I am not interested in hearsay.

1. Is the move from stock 20mm carb to a 24mm flatside worth the dough or is it only really good for tracks with at least a 900ft straight away?
2. How much better is the 24mm flatside over the 24mm roundslide?
3. Is there a readily available ignition that significantly beats the stock one?
4. I hear the Kitaco pipes are POSs. If they are, what's a good one that is readily available and how is the power compared to stock?
5. I hear the Kitaco big-bore kit isn't too great either. Again, if it isn't, what is a good big-bore kit should I choose to go that way?

All of your responses are appreciated.

Re: NSR 50 Mods

Okay, I think I can answer some of your questions...

My teammate had a 24mm flat slide carb and it sucked ***! Don't get it! It was too hard to tune right and not worth it. Get a 24mm round slide. I've got one and it is the cats meow. I tossed in a 130 main jet and raised the clip on up one and it is spot on! Very well worth it. You can get them for around $100 new.
Not sure about the Kitaco pipe, but I've got an Arrow exhaust that I bought from Calamari and it didn't fit. I liked the pipe so much that I ended up cutting the mounts and even the stinger off the pipe and re-welded them in the right place. I love the pipe and it makes lots of power. If I were to do it again, I would get a WRW Racing exhaust. That pipe is, IMO, the BEST pipe on the market now. Call Billy Wiese at 281-610-2270 and order one. Tell him Brian from Ohio sent ya.

I also have the 63cc Kitaco big bore kit on my NSR as well. I orderd it from Bill Wiese also. He did all my motor work and cut my head to match the cylinder. I raced my NSR when it was stock and loved it, but now that I've got the 63cc kit... I'll never go back. It makes so much more power and it makes racing these that much more fun! Check out the dyno sheet, the proof is in the numbers! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6.../WRW_NSR63.jpg

Here are a few pic's of my NSR with a 63cc Kitaco kit, 24mm Round slide carb, Arrow exhaust (custom cut/fitted) and aftermarket bodywork.

Re: NSR 50 Mods

Those are some great answers and results! I actually watched that vid last night and I was thinking that thing grunts out of corners! So, did you have to send the whole motor or just the cylinder and head? What did you have all done and can I ask the cost? I hear that WRW pipe works with stock and modded engines and is reasonably priced.

Re: NSR 50 Mods

Yeah, in the video my NSR and my teammate (behind me) both have 63cc kits that were built by Billy. I was running a 15tooth front sprocket and my teammate was running a 14tooth front. He had a little more pull on me in the tight stuff, but I would inch away on the long straight.

I got a siezed 63cc cylinder on ebay last year, and sent it into Billy to bore it out to the next over-bore. I also sent in my head and had him cut and match it to the cylinder. He did a little porting to my exhaust port and sent the new piston kit.... The total bill for mine was around $275 shipped. I don't know what the kit NEW would cost... give him a call and ask.

If you do get the 63cc kit, you'll need upgraded clutch springs... Billy has them also!

The WRW pipe is great! One of my other teammates has it and it works well with his stock cylinder. He is now thinking of getting a 63cc kit for his bike now after we spanked him at the track

Re: NSR 50 Mods

No problem man... The Metrakit... yeah they are great for kids... I rode two and the power is great (50gp and the 72cc Metrakit) but the riding egro's are tight and feel too much like a kids bike. The clip-ons felt like they were sitting by my belly. I'm 5'8" and 150lbs, so the NSR fits me better then the Metrakit. The NSR is a good in between bike, lots more room, might not have the power, but I think it is a better bike. We have a few in our club and they are always broken and from what the two have told me it is very hard to get parts for them. I'll stick to an HRC bike, where I can go to the local Honda dealership and order anything I want for it.

Good luck and hope that your project goes well.

Re: NSR 50 Mods

Brian,

Where can you get the 24mm round slide for that price?

I'll call Billy to get a quote on the pipe.......as I have a spare 04 NSR motor that I may eventually put in a 63cc kit for kicks. Then again, I may sell the spare motor to buy and install an 4-stroke XR100 or a Honda 150r motor......a pondered thought.

Anyways, great info.

BTW, we have a couple kids that race their Metrakit 50 (not Pro) against our NSR's. The 'stock' NSR is VERY competitive against the 'stock' Metrakit 50cc. We don't have any modified NSR classes within our club. So it doesn't justify the cost of doing the mods to race only one competitive class. Other class is an 80GP.

WeOur Club had 3 classes to race the 'stock' NSR; Formula 50 (modified YSR class), Super 50 (2-stroke 50cc, 12" and BIG wheel), and NSR Cup (stock only).

I've got the website at home on my old computer! I'm at the fire house now... I'll have to fire up the old computer and see if I can find it for you. It was very cheap even for a 20mm carb... that was around $85
