YSR50 to YSR80 conversion.....

well fellow riders.
here goes. i'm taking my mint YSR50 to a local YSR guru (Ray) so he can upgrade it to a YSR80 motor. I've gotten new sprockets (14T front and 41T rear) so I can see how that ratio works for me.

the mods that Im' making this time are as follows:
1. installing a YSR80 engine.
2. transferring my current 20mm carb and nology hot wire to the new engine.
3. installing new proflo pipe for the YSR80 exhaust port difference.

other mods:
4. installing flush mount front indicators.
5. installing TCR triple top clamp.

I'll post piks of the upgrade hopefully tomorrow sometime if I can steel the camera from my wife.

Oh, and this is what the engine looks like "before" tomorrow's mods.

it's done!

well fellas, it's done.
my YSR50 is now officially a YSR80, titled, street legal with loads of "punch".

I didn't get a chance to get any piks (sorry) but I can give a review/report.
well, I ended up taking the bike to Dr. Ray's shop (resident YSR guru/expert).
Ray tore into the engine swapping in a matter of seconds. we had the 50 out of there in no time flat.

I was able to reuse the same exterior clutch covers, steel head screws as well.

when we had the 80 in, we tried to fire it up. no go. it didn't produce any spark. seems the black/red wires were bad. that lead Dr. Ray to deduce that the stator was messed up. so he simply swapped out the stator from the 50cc engine into the 80cc engine and the thing came to life!!!! (Muuuaaaahhaaha!!!!)

at that point it was too late that evening so I just took it home and test rode it up and down my street.

well, today (Mother's day) I had a good chance to ride the YSR80........I hit a cruising speed of approximately 72mph (as told by TCR). don't know what the top speed of the thing is yet but Im' sure I'll have fun figuring it out.

thanks

it's real nice to have "Dr. Ray-the YSR guru" to help out. this guy is phenomenal. he can do anything, absolutely anything to these bikes. he knows them inside and out.

when I was leaving his shop the bike wasn't sparking up. he then looked into his manual and used this volt meter thingy to determine which wires had current. he then determined that the red/black wires were bad. he then went to the stator, unscrewed the stator out and put my old 50cc stator in and VOAlllaaaaa! she fired up. she was even firing up with just the small amount of gas in the float bowl. it didn't even have a tank, just runnin' with the gas in the float..........i was like......"***, this guy can even make a YSR start without any gas!!!!"............

Congrats with in the install and on acquiring such a rare gem. I’ve been following your posts in various sites and can say that you sure do know how to network well. Be sure to give a detailed performance comparison between the two motors cause we're all ears...

You’ve inspired me to pursue the same swap on my own. I read the thread where you, ysrcali, spoon, and others debated what the YSR80 motor's street value is worth. As for me I’m going to fork over the 500 bills for an 80 from jtrading sometime this year. I tried to establish a contact with Jamie from (Jamie's NSR Mini Bike Page) but it looks like a no go (he won't respond to my email). I’m still waiting for a reply from Jun of jtrading to get my official quote. The only way I got my JDM tail light/turn signals was through jtradings eBay auction because Jun never responded to my original email. I guess I must have the word (Thief) tattooed on my forehead because it seams my money no good on the west coast. The bad thing about that is California has all the toys and tuning shops. I just need a few months a come up with the lute then I can enjoy eating bugs at 72mph. till then Rob type away brother I’m listening

small write up....

alrighty then. I have few moments to kill before I start my work day.

here's a brief write up on the YSR80 upgrade:
1. 80 engine pulls a lot harder than the 50 (it's very noticible).
2. has more of a "growl" to it than the 50 does (perhaps the proflo pipe has something to do with it as well)
3. will pull front wheel up on the first and second gear, adn sometimes the 3rd.
4. you have "relearn" how to ride your YSR all over again (this is a good thing)
5. if you gear it right (I'm currently at a 14T-front, and 41T-rear) you can reach higher speeds - more top end.
6. I've got it geared so that it'll accelarate better for daily street riding and topping out at around72mph or so (that's as high as I dared to go for fear of getting a ticket)

that's about it.
i'll see if I can put some photos sometime but basically it looks exactly like the 50 engine only slight fatter and it came with these rubber rib like parts that are connected to the fins of the cylinder.

go for it!!

go for it bro.........it's the best "bang for the buck" upgrade you'll probably do.

and if you are short of stature and weigh in at around 140-150 pounds.........this 80 will seem like you are running like bananas..............heck, I'm 5'9" (no giant mind you but on the heavier end of the spectrum) and 200lbs and this thing pulls me like crazy. or at least it feels that way.

go for it............

would a yz85 motor be faster? granted i would have to fab brackets for the frame and such, my goal is to hit 100 or low 13's in the 1/4, would either be possible w/ the ysr80 or yz80?

A YZ85 motor would be a monster, I know, I have one. The only major problem would be lighting, but i've heard of people using a rechargeable system.

My only draw back was sprockets when I did the conversion. The YZ85 has a 425 sprocket instead of the 420. I had my counter sprocket shaved down at a local machine shop, that way I still run a 420 combo.

i plunked down my $ and will be acquiring a BarryAllen special (including the tach and bracket) from Jun in the next few weeks. i've never taken a motor out of a bike before. just wonder how many mistakes i'll make this time. since it will be a while before i can modify it, (per TCR's suggestion) i bought the factory YSR80 pipe too. the nice lady who answered the phone told me to hold off on buying the stub adapter to make the Tommey pipe work on the motor because the stock carb on the 80 will not run right with any aftermarket pipe. she says there is no dyno jet kit available for the 18mm mikuni to rectify this issue. so it'll be a YSR80 stocker for a while. maybe old Saint Nick will bring me a shiny new 20mm mikuni this Christmas.

congrates mate!

you will see. what a difference 60% more power will do for you. it'll run like "bananas" that 80 but don't take me word for it..............

Yes, that's the typical 80 with the rubber fin supports. just like mine.

good luck sir. be a good boy this year so Santa can bring you some new toys eh!!!

How are prices on Ebay these days? UP/Down????

I have parts to go!!!!! Need cash to fund new 400 trackbike. Sorry no 20m or 24mm carb for sale.

way offtopic - I had time last weekend to get the rads and exhaust installed. And got the bug to make brackets to fit the bodwork. I was gonna respray but got lazy and used my old fairings. I was up till midnight and got up 4 hrs later to get to work. I am totally hating life right now....UGH.

I'll post up pix of it.

I believe it does fit.

I think they do fit.

I think the 80 engine uses the same reed block that the 50 engine uses. at least it did on mine. I didn't have to buy any new reed cage nor anything and it worked out fine.

glad to hear you are making the move to the 80 side of the family.

cool beans brother rider

the more the merrier is what I always say. it'd be great if you could be in Boca. heck mate, then my old YSR guru Ray would have another potential client. Ray lives in Ft. Lauderdale (off of Davie road and I-95 freeway -right off of the I-95 exit).

or Virginia huh........wow. talk about moving away from Florida.
I lived in Maryland for 3 years. Freakin' hated it. the weather is God awful in the winters. it's humid as the blazes in the summer. no breezes at all.

DC is a very "cultural" place. the museum are great but the weather and the peoples attitudes in general suck. Bitter, bitter wet cold in the winters. Man, I remember those horrible wet 34 degree rains we'd get. it wouldn't want to snow because the temp wouldn't want to drop below freezing. you were always cold and wet. if it snows that's no biggy cause the snow tends to make people cheery, all white and all but man, those 34 degree rains in the winter absolutely sucked!!!! just be prepared for that bubs..........

Hope you can manage and finagle your way over to the East coast......you'd be much happier here.
