3 new Razor electric pocketbikes on the way

My sister is getting her 3 sons Razor electric pocketbikes for Christmas. Anything I should tell her about the upkeep on em? (She is in Ohio and I am in Arizona, so over the phone advise is the only way I'll be able to help).

I know nothing about electric motors.

Just make sure to not keep the batteries in too cold of a place, warmer they store them in the longer they last. And always try and let the batteries fully decharge before charging them up again, helps extend battery life. And most importantly...prepare them cuz I'm sure the kids will want the real deal 2 strokes when they get a little older lol. That's about all I know. Good luck

NOPE.

That is true for the Nickel Cadmium (NiCd) batteries that the Remote control crowd uses.

The Razors use sealed, Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) lead/acid batts. Totally draining them will drastically reduce their life.

A 24V pack will take a charge up to 30V. When the charger is un-plugged, the voltage will drop to about 26-26.5 volts.
This will be its "fully charged" state. Once the batts reach 24 volts again, it will start to slow down and would then be considered empty.. time to get it back on the charger.

One other thing about prolonging battery life, always charge them after each use, letting them sit around dis-charged kills em'.

Your nephews are lucky kids, Robert. Why not buy them a cheap digital voltmeter to go with their EVs this Xmas?

Thanks for the info Steve!

I'll be sure and add a voltmeter to the protective gear I'm buying them for Christmas.

You are welcome Robert. I'm always happy to hear when a young person is turned on to electric vehicles, especially when it is a PocketBike.. makes a FINE gift; )

Question

Hey I don't mean to jack the thread but what kind of voltmeter would be used on say a Razor Electric Pocket Bike? My girlfriend's 2 younger brothers will finally be getting a pair of electric bikes so we could ride together.

Does anyone know of a voltage meter that could be installed on the bike to check the charge?

I've just started to get familiar with the 2-stroke engines and know nothing about these electric motors.

Thanks for the help!

Hey Justin,

Any 24 to 48V volt meter should work, you can pick some up on eBay cheap. Or check your local golf cart shop - they use ones like that on the golf carts. Some will display the actual voltage (better) and some only have little LEDs. Or you can just use a handheld from Radio Shack - doesn't have to be on the bike...

And ditto to Steve earlier on charging right after use!!! Keep em' up.

Re: New purchases

Re: I'm happy to see that electric pocketbikes are getting more and more attention. If you've checked out the other topics on the forum, you can see my posts regarding my racing club racing these Razor pocketbikes. On general maitenence, if your kids are just doing casual riding, you have nothing to worry about. I don't recomend riding on the grass: it just drains the battery. The battery life generally lasts for about 40minutes, and if you do drain the battery down to nothing, it will take a good 4-6hour charge to refresh it. You shouldn't have to worry about replacing any bearings, tires, cables, etc. if your kids are just using them to cruise around. They are fast; it may not seem like it, and I strongly advise long pants, long shirt, and most importantly a helmet. I hope that your kids enjoy their new bikes as much as I have enjoyed mine. Thanks.
