no.
Your AVERAGE electric bike won't do 40 (look at higher wattage 700-800W). On average, they run for about an hour and a half, and it takes about 6 hours to charge.

Most of the electric PB's will have somewhere between a 500-800W motor and can last for up to 15 miles, but top out at around 30, maybe a little over.

An ETEK'd powered PB will top out at over 60, but the range is going to be a lot lower. The ETEK's are awesome to race and to go fast. But to go for range you'll need bigger batteries.

If you're used to cruising at 40 or so, you won't be happy with a 30MPH electric PB. An ETEK'd bike could give you a 20 Mile range, if done right, and riden carefully, but would take a good 4 to 6 hours to recharge.

Hope that helps...

If you plan on getting an electric for racing, be sure to check to see if there's an electric class. A key element to racing them is having a fair race against similar bikes.

Good point AtomicBiker. Every track that I have gone to with an electric has gone out of their way to find a class that I could race in. E-tek powered MidBikes now run in either mod mid or Outlaw/Unlimited classes at PBGP races. The first few races were a bit lop-sided, running them with the fast guys is the only fair place to put them.

The 36V electric X9 with the 750 watt (1 HP) motor that byxe.com has, could be a good match in the stock mid class. It would be quicker and more competitive by fitting one of the 100 amp controllers that SEVO has to offer.

Sounds like a good PBP project bike, eh?!
