How to: Install Dellorto SHA 16/16 on a Blata rep.

Contrary to popular belief, the 16/16 is not just a direct bolt-on in place of the 14/14 rep carb. To get everything out of it, a few simple mods are needed.

1. The choke plate needs to be modified. On the carbs I have seen, it overlaps the carb bore by a significant amount. This is simple to deal with. Juts pop the choke off, and take a file or Dremel to it until it is just slightly bigger than the carb bore. I expected better of Dellorto...

2. The intake manifold is too small. All the engines I have seen have a tube in the intake manifold that measures right around 15mm. To take advantage of the 16mm carb, this needs to be enlarged. I used sandpaper wrapped around a metal tube; one could use a sanding drum on a Dremel or even a 5/8" drill bit. Take your time and keep it smooth.

3. Jetting is simple once you figure it out. Every engine is different, of course, but this is roughly what I have found. The 82 it comes with is completely useless. Do not even run the engine with it. My engine has had a fair amount of internal case work, and needs at least a 92. Yesterday was 20 degrees Celsius, and I am at 750' elevation, which gave a light brown. To be safe, I am going to buy a 94 and give that a try. On a stock engine, it sounds like a 90 is about perfect.

The 16/16 makes a significant difference over stock. If you are after performance with simplicity, I highly recommend it. It provides a noticeable boost to low end, and adds a significant asmount to the top end. It is my favorite low-buck mod, after opening the reeds and port matching the head.

Next mod: PHBG 19

Update: 94 main is perfect. Today was 20 degrees C and RH about 40%, and it was just a tiny bit rich...exactly where I want it. Having a proper jet made a huge difference; with a jet that is too small, you run very lean in the low/mid, and power suffers quite a bit. I am now quite pleased with this carb.

For those buying a 16/16, if you have a stock engine, I would recommend you get 88/90/92 main jets with it. For an engine that has internal port work, 90/92/94.

Re: How to: Install Dellorto SHA 16/16 on a Blata rep.

Hi, my C-1 has finally gotten some run time and I am disappointed to find that it shut down on me at med-high rpm, ( approx. 11,000) It was pulling good and leveled out after it changed it's tone indicating it was going lean. I sealed everything involved with the intake and I understand the stock jet is crapola. Would this be enough to cause a lean condition?
I ran it in 73 degree dry air and got lucky all it did was heat up when it shut down. The cyclinder also seemed stuck but would slowly turn with a stout pull on the recoil. I slowly turned it until it freed up and got it home. I checked it and it starts and runs okay.(whew! I was worried I damaged the cylinder) I wonder if a replacement carb would be better than rejetting the mostly plastic delloto replica?
thanks

DillingerC1.....YES, is the answer! I suggest using a Dellorto 19mm...the carb you have is a bottle-neck issue...a larger carb....and one thats not constructed of plastic rids this issue.

I actually have both a 19mm Dellort REPLICA, as well as a genuine Dellorto 19mm carb....they work great! BUT, the Dellorto is better...

If you thought your bike ran good in the first post you made, you will understand theres alot more to your bike than you may be aware! A Zocchi pipe will be a great addition if you want to wake it up even more. Have you opened the case and shaved the reed port to allow your reeds to open up more? Have you....wait, Ill let you catch up with this for now...
