So here is a concept, since there is so much controversy about the differences from Production, to Super Production bikes, how about this,
Production Class
-6.2 based air cooled motor
-DM proddy pipe or any standard Polini pipe (no Race pipes)
-14mm SHA carb
-no internal mods
-standard crank only
Super Production
-6.2 based motor (ZPF, Polini, BZM, Giannini, etc.) again limited to a 3 port design, water cooled OK.
-any mass produced pipe (no one offs)
-16mm SHA carb
-still no internal mods
-race cranks allowed
This would further define the classes, and leave no room for "interpretation", and severly limit what each motor is capable of making in the way of HP.
Also, less important, but part of these "concept" is that the Open Class would be basically this-
Open Class
-6.2 based motor (ZPF, Polini, BZM, Giannini, etc.) any port configuration.
-any pipe
-any carb (no longer limit to 21mm)
-any crank
-all internal mods allowed (cylinder, case, piston)
-Limited to 40mm piston
-Naturally aspirated
This essentially makes the open class similar to "Formula Extreme" where its just run what you brung, very few restrictions. This would ultimately become the "big money" class.
So if you have a water cooled bike it has to run super? Dave
Yes, by restricting the Production bike to a/c, you again (along with the other restrictions) keep the HP and the possible "open to interpretation" stuff to a minimum. This will also keep the cost down to a minimum.
Also, if you are against the idea, please post why, this is just a concept, and I am trying to guage its acceptance, both for and against, if you are against, we need to know why? "it suks" is not a good explanation, we need to know why it suks.
Ted I was just wondering why the inclusion of a 16mm carb w/ the Superproddie. Just asking not trying to make trouble I just want to understand the thinking behind this. I thought the addition of the race pipe, race crank was good enough to seperate the 2 classes and w/ your new proposal water cooled would be the other thing seperating the 2 classes...

I feel ya Mark, I did not mean to sound standoffish (**** computers and lack of context). I just feel that with the issues we have out here on the west coast, that if we could further differenciate the classes (as bif and blatant as possible), there would just be no room for interpretation. It would be "this is it, deal, or don't race" kinda thing.

You mis-read, I said 40mm piston. 50cc bikes use a 40mm piston, 40cc bikes use a 36mm piston.

Let me know your thoughts
Sounds good Ted but will the 6.2 upgrade kit be available for the 4.2's before start of the new season and if so what sort of estimated price range will we be looking at?
What if you went 1 step further... keep the proddy specs but allow air or water cooled engines, and then eliminate Super Proddy and instead went with 2 open classes such as a regular and sumo open or maybe a 40 vs a 50 cc open? This way proddy bikes would be off the shelf racers and everything above that would be flat-out racing? May not work in all racing markets but it was just a thought I was having

Nice idea, but with Super Proddy being the most popular class around the country not sure if doing away with the Super Proddy class (or merging it with the open class) would be welcomed by very many people.
HHHHmmm , Interesting, but no matter what.. I still think people will cheat when it comes to any Production Class... I was at a race this weekend and a 6.2 class was going on... guess who won... this guy name Don Walker riding a 4.2 blata... hahahah....
Sounds like a good proposal Ted. Nice to see someone taking a shot at this.
I'm not sure what happens to all those air cooled Giannini bikes that can't take a DM pipe.
