IRK Question...

From what I've researched, and word of mouth, I'm hearing that I need to pick up a IRK... However, the kits I'm looking at, which they say will work on XR50, CRF50, XR70, Pitbike and Mini ATV Engines: XR/CRF 50, 70, Z 50, BBR, Thumpstar, SSR, Sikk MX. most Chinese made and most HONDA Horizontal kick start engines say that they wont work on electric start engines??? Now from what I know, from when I had an x1, the electric start was like linked to the flywheel area kinda, while my x18 starter is like way outta the way. So will the IRK work??? It looks just like the kitco or what not kit.

Re: IRK Question...

It won't work. The electric start engines have a totally different flywheel and there is a sprocket behind it that the starter gear rides on. The starter on these bikes is connected to the crank via a chain that spins a one-way clutch on the crank. I suppose you could try to make it work but I don't remember what you will run into.
Why do you want an IRK anyway, they are really pretty useless and in my opinion take away performance as you will not have that snap in the throttle anymore. Only gain from them is a couple hundred RPM at the top and that is only if you are running some crazy flowing race head with a big ole cam and big ole carb and do nothing but keep the thing pinned at all times, heck even then they don't seem to be worth the money or hassle.

Re: IRK Question...

OK - thanks bart! Was just wondering as I found a kit for like $40 versus like the 200 ones on PBU!

Re: IRK Question...

The IRK removes your flywheel, the flywheel is not that heavy on these bikes to start with and the IRK bikes that were supposed to rev to the moon did not seem to but they did loose all that snap coming out of corners. Essentially a bike with the irk just doesn't "jump" when you crack the gas, it looses some of that and they are harder to kick start. If you found one for $40 I would say give it a try but I doubt you will be impressed.
Oh, for your race cam thread, the cam sprocket from Honda is only like $7 if I remember correctly and you should have just went ahead and got it from Trailbikes as it is their kit and all you had to do is tell Mike that you needed the sprocket and he would have included one as many of the old kits came with them so I am sure he has them laying around. When you get the 114 kit or a HC piston make sure you get one with the correct dome for the 25-22 head as the combustion chamber on those is bigger so a HC piston for a stock head or the old race head is not really all that high compression with the 25-22 head.

Re: IRK Question...

I just looked at the two pistons for the old and the new head and they actually look to be the same height and same dome but the valve reliefs are slightly larger for the bigger valve head.
