Starter Motor Fell Out!

It was the end of last summer and I was going for my final runs before winter came around. Anyways, before I was going to call it a day, I hit a bump and my start motor fell out! Luckily it was still attatched and landed in my under body, where I had to wheel it back home. Now that the summer season is approaching, I attempted to open up the starter motor case and found that the chain (that powers what appears to be an alternator) was not meshed with the gears. Simply enough, I put the chain back onto the gears and secured the starter motor tight. I try to start it and it still doesn't start. I just hear the starter motor cranking, and the engine does not power. Any advice is appreciated...

So the engine is turning over and not firing or is the starter not turning the engine over?

The starter is not turning the engine over. I can hear the starter chain moving, but the engine does not fire up.

I guess you need some definitions. Engine not firing means the engine is turning over but not starting. You are saying you are hearing the starter chain turning but the engine is turning and not firing or is the engine not turning and not firing? I am trying to determine if something is still wrong with your starter or if you have another problem, can you start the engine with the kickstart?

Re: Starter Motor Fell Out!

your starter gears are stripped..you need a new starter for your bike..the starter is getting power from the battery but the gear that turns to start the bike is spinning not engaging...when you order a new starter make sure you get the right one..even though you knoew the type make sure it is either the top or bottom style starter you need....they are not interchangeable.........

I guess you understood him better then I did. BTW, no need to change the whole starter when you can just change the gear, only a little snap ring holds it on.

Re: Starter Motor Fell Out!

Sorry for the confusion bartw. So to make things clear, I hold the ignition button, I hear the chain of the starter moving, but nothing happens to the engine. So I assume that dragonkeep2000 sounds right.... Which leads to another question:
Where do I get a new starter, or as bartw said, a new gear?
Thank you so much for bartw and dragonkeep2000 for helping.

Re: Starter Motor Fell Out!

bartw it is not he chain gear he hears spinning it is the starter itself...it is the inside shaft spinning . the gear that holds the engine chain is fine it is the shaft gear inside the starter that is shot...the only way to fix it (if you don't know how to rebuild a starter)is to replace it..........

Re: Starter Motor Fell Out!

Thanks, I emailed them and asked if they ship to Canada. I was browsing their stie and found this:
http://www.pocketbikeparts.com/product_p/fssm301726.htm
I think that one resembles my pocket bike starter. Is this what I need to replace?
I was looking at my bike and I think it's supported by two bolts. Like I said earlier, it fell out before, so I cannot determine if it's 2 or 3. The starter motor is underneath my engine(?), right behind the front wheel. To clarify, nothing is between the starter and the ground.
Also, it does not show X6 model bikes, which is what I have, but does X7 have the same body? I am thinking of buying some new fairings and possibly that starter.

Re: Starter Motor Fell Out!

the x7 farings will not fit any bike but the x7.....if you starter is under the engine then this is not the right starter...the starter that you show is for a top mount starter.........look for the x6 & x8 bikes for body parts..........all the starters for the 4 strokes top or bottom will fit all bikes...make sure you order a bottom starter for your bike if the starter mounts on the bottom.....

Re: Starter Motor Fell Out!

Okay so I have to order X6 fairings and a 2 bolt low mount starter. I'll have someone double check to see if this is the problem or I may have more than one. Thank you so much dragonkeep2000, I will keep you posted on how it goes. Thanks again!!!!!
