Question Air filter installation help.

HAs anyone installed a aftermarket air filter on a 49CC motor? I was given a air filter from the shop I purchased my bikes from. I attempted to install the air filter. However, now the bike won't start. I'm sure I'm making a NOVICE mistake.

I removed the old cover, airfilter (sponge) and the choke switch plate. I bolted the stack or mount onto the carb and then slid the airfilter on top of that and tightened down the clamp. The motor won't start and sounds like it is getting too much air?????

1.) I am concerned about NO gaskets being used or sealer.
2.) No choke plate to open or close off the air on starts.

What all am I missing here? Similiar air filter and stack or mount is in my gallery.

You have an air leak somewhere. Gasket is a must.

No Choke Switch plate?

Is it correct to not use the choke switch plate? I take it thats not necessary once the unit has been sealed properly with a gasket?

Question Placement order.

CRUD!! OK.. I'm better now..

So where exactly does the choke switch plate go? Now I have the unit bolted right up to the carb. Does the choke plate bolt right up to the carb and then the mount and the airfilter? Does anyone have a pic? Also, won't I need longer bolts?

i read somewhere in these forums that no choke is needed..for the first time you start the bike without a choke place a plastic bag over the air filter...then start it up..the bag acts like a choke. never tried it but it fast adn easy..try it out

Cool No plate.. Just platsic..

So just to re-cap. Leave the the air filter bolted up to the carb without the choke switch plate. Just use a plastic bag tightly around the pipe to start. Will you have to use the bag everytime?

yup you would have to use a bag.so just like i said it is better to just get a choke plate.all you'll have to do is install it once and everytime you cold start it you just have to flip a switch and warm it up for the day.the bag trick works but it isn't convenient.

The bag would go over the filter not the pipe. I have never had much success with a stock carb and no choke plate. I currently am running Walbro WT-603 carbs which have a choke in the carb. Watch the design of the choke plate because some put the lever in a bind when you tighten the 2 screws.

this is kind of a stupid question but is there a gasket between the carb and the cylinder manifold (where it bolts up)

Talking Guess what? Plastic over the pipe doesn't work..

You are NOT going to believe this! I was actually coming back to this thread to advise everyone of the problem I had today trying to start the bike. I was going to say that covering the pipe with plastic or clogging the exhaust holes with plastic didn't work.

Well DUH! Ya big DUMB A$$ wasn't suppose to cover the pipe or exhaust ports with plastic. LOL

I totally missed this thread the first time. I guess tomorrow or later tonight I'll try to cover the filter and see what happens. LOL.

Oh, by the way I purchased a gasket and installed it so I'm hoping everything starts next go round..

Don't CLOWN me too hard.. Please..

Talking Wooo Hoooo Guess what?

Well I went out again this evening and covered the air filter this time.. LOL

Guess what? It didn't start but sounded better. After about the 50th pull and 20 different turns on the idle/RPM screw I decided to take the bag off.

2 pulls later she started and I tuned her idle/RPM and got her purrin' like a kitten now. And yes the air filter did make a difference in take-off,top speed and overall engine run and performance. I am so glad I got that thing runnin again. My Daughter was about to tell Mom I broke her new bike.

Tattle Tale .
