cateye and x7 fairings are, in fact, made of ABS plastic

there was some speculation before about what they were made of. some said fiberglass, some said plastic/urethane. well after working on my brother's x7 fairings for an upcoming cf project, i discovered that they are made of the same plastic as the cateyes, and most likely the same with the x1/x2.

it cracks easily and is hazardous if dragged across the asphault IE crashing. the fumes emited from the plastic when heated or dragged across the asphault when crashing is very hazardous to your health, so be careful everyone. once the plastic has cooled down, it should be safe.

getting a pit off topic but do you make your fairing out of just carbonfiber or do lay it on over the plastic???

I have one of the "old style" cateyes, (no headlight cutouts) that is made of urethane overlay on a fiberglass shell. Its strong as a rock BUT the the outer layer is prone to cracking and flaking. A cure for this is to pic an flake any damage off the body and repair with Bondoglass. Its similar to bondo but has figerglass webbing in the mixture.

If anyone has replaced your "no headlight" cateye body with a newer one and still has the old shell let me know, we use them on our drag bikes and will be glad to buy them from you.

I am a Plastics engineer doing product design and plastic injection mold design and I can tell you ABS is not hazardous. PVC on the otherr hand is very hazardous. ABS will only be harmful if it is on fire.
