what I can do to get my x1 running gooood

My ride is a yellow X1

Hi Everyone, I'm new here. From the looks of it there is a lot of collaborative knowledge here and I'm excited to join the community, learning at first, and hopefully contributing back later to future noobs

Anyway, I've always wanted a pocket bike & ever since I was little boy I thought motorcycles were cool. Due to monetary issues and whatever other reason, I was never able to get one. About two years ago though my uncle brought over a pocket bike that he for free (I'm assuming someone who worked with had it and didn't use it anymore). He got it running (roughly) and I fun with it for a little while but stopped riding it since it was always a lot of work getting it started. And it would also always turn off too. So yeah, since that time I've gotten my license and have joined the MR2 community, so I'm not as helpless as before about how these things run, but I still need your help in getting mine to run clean.

Here's some info that might help everyone trouble shoot my problem:

My friend and I took out the bike a few days ago and tried to get it running. It was left outside (covered) but it had a lot of rust water dripping from the pull starter area when I tried to start it. We took it apart, flushed it and removed whatever rust we could, sprayed WD40 everywhere, and spent hours trying to put the starter back together after the spring/coil exploded. After vigorously trying to pull start it like crazy, it turned on. It had a rough start, but it turned on, so we were happy. Then we bought a new spark plug for it. It runs, but not as smoothly as I'd like.

So here's the problem:

The bike is apparently used.

It can't hold it's idle.

It doesn't start on one pull. I have to put it on full choke (push what I believe is the butterfly valve toggle all the way up) and then start pulling away several times before it turns on. Then I have to gradually but quickly pull the toggle down. It seems that if I want it all the way down, I have to be on wide open throttle or else it just dies.

There is a lot of white smoke when I start the bike. If it is anything like my MR2, could this mean that I'm burning tremendous amounts of oil and that my piston ring(s) are possibly bad? I only filled the bad boy up once and I didn't really know what I was doing so the case might just be that I added too much oil for the ratio. Looking at the gas tank, the fluid inside looks dark. Maybe I should just add more gasoline? I don't know how to eyeball 20:1

Battery is dead, I think. Electric start obviously doesn't work. I didn't try this week but months/years ago when I last ran the bike, when it was on, the electronics would work. Headlights and signals would work, and work better when I was on WOT. I read that you can charge the battery by riding for an hour. Does that mean that if I ride my bike for an hour, I'll miraculously be able to electric start again?

I want to do what I can to make it a reliable toy ie. idle and start with just 1-2 pulls. Electrical starts would be fancy, but I guess not absolutely necessary.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

sounds like you need to adjust the mixture screw, its the little screw with the spring on the side of your carb, screw it all the way down and then back it off 2 1/2 turns and that should get it started and you can adjust it from there 1/8th turn at a time to get it where its running best. -mike

First since the bike is used clean out the tank and the carb and blow some compressed air through the little ports inside the carb to clear them. Mix your oil and gas at a 40:1 ratio (3.2ozs to 1 gal gas) 20:1 is just too much oil in the gas or even 32:1 (3.6ozs).

When using the electric starter are you holding the left brake lever when you hit the starter button? There's a safety switch in the left brake lever that needs to be pushed while pushing the starter button.

isaddict has already said to reset the mixture screw but also try turn up the idle some to. Make sure the carb isn't loose.

Re: what I can do to get my x1 running gooood

ok, thanks a lot guys for the help, I really appreciate it. The bike actually runs pretty good when it's on. There are only a few issues...

the bike still can't hold its old on the idle BUT it does start a lot easier (sometimes just 1 crank/yank but at most just a couple). the behavior is strange. sometimes it'll idle for a good 10 seconds with the choke all the way up and sometimes it does so quickly. the last few starts that I've done, I have to open the choke as soon as I start it or else it shuts off right away. I'll try looking up how to adjust the idle as well.

Haven't mixed with the mixture screw yet, not even sure what that is but I'll try that tomorrow.

Also, when I start, it has trouble sometimes but as soon as I open the choke, it goes crazy and even scoots forward a little. I Think I read up a little about that but not sure how to fix it yet

And what speeds can the bike handle? I was going down a hill today and hit 30 mph, which is 5 mph faster than what I can usually get to. I don't want the bike to fall apart while I'm going at speeds like that.

and I'm assuming that if I'm holding it at 25 mph for extended periods of time, the motor would blow?

I didnt know you had to hold the left handle to start it with the button? I wish I could find a electrical diagram to get mine started...Im stuck waiting for pull start and pull start pawl..
unless idle up way hi i wouldnt worry about blowing up motor goin 25-30 or downhill unless ur gas/oil mix is good and its not smoking bad or hear it whining? lol

I cant get my X1 started either, it looks like new- I bought it for 20 bucks. I have spark and fuel, the pull starter is broken. I got a new one, but during the install I noticed the starter pawl is broken in the starter. How do I get the starter off?
