Noob Blata 2.5 questions

I just picked up a used Blata 2.5 as my first pocketbike. I was able to yank the pull cord a bunch of times and it actually started even though I'm sure it had been sitting around for a while unused and I wasn't even sure it had any gas in it.

I'm having some issues with it now though. I broke the pull cord (it looked very weathered) so I replaced it. The coil spring and the teeth on the ratchet plate appeared to be in good condition, but after I installed the new cord and pulled it a few times the handle doesn't get pulled all the way back in. Is the coil spring a part that needs replacing periodically?

When I pull the cord it is **really** hard to pull and it seems to catch a lot. Most of the times I can only pull the cord about 1/2 to 2/3 the way out before it stops. Every now and then I can get a full pull and the engine almost starts.

The prev. owner said that he put some Giannini parts in it. I don't know what's available for the 2.5 but I wonder if the compression has been bumped up and that is the explanation for the really hard pull on the cord.

I removed the fairing and noticed that fuel is leaks from the bottom of the carb. It is really slow and only a few drops leak overnight. I don't know if this is because I've been pulling the cord a bunch of times w/o starting it, and therefore flooding it or if it is because a gasket is leaking?

I suppose my main question is - do you think I need to replace the coil spring? The feeling of the pull cord just seems like something is wrong, but I have a brand new cord in it. And, is it normal to have fuel drip from the carb after pulling the cord a bunch of times without succeeding at starting it?

Re: Noob Blata 2.5 questions

pull off the carb and check the gasket & float.. but it sounds like the oveflow is happening from the constant pulling while trying to start it. i have a similiar problem with an ada head i put on my cag with a fcsc.. the compression is so strong i broke several pullstarters & cogs. i have a alum cog in now but it just ruins the flywheel..i have a feeling i will continue to break "stock" cag pullstarter internals unless i can find a heavy duty billet starter with strong internal. not sure if the blata one is much better than the chinese one.

Re: Noob Blata 2.5 questions

Hi . It sounds like the leaking is because theres too much Gas as the petrol lever has been left on when you have been trying to start it. It also sounds like you ave a flooded engine . Take out your Spark plug , Then pull it over a couple of times maybe 5-6 put the spark plug back in petrol back on then fire it up . Let me know how it goes .

Re: Noob Blata 2.5 questions

I figured out the trick to starting it is that I have to have the throttle wide-open.

The leaking was probably from the connection between the petcock and carb body being loose. I tried tightening it and accidentally turned it the wrong way. I discovered that whatever gasket/seal was there had fallen all apart and there was a mess of orange bits inside. What sort of seal/gasket is supposed to go between the plastic carb fuel input and metal petcock?

There is a screw head inside the plastic fuel input to the carb. What is that there for? Is that a fuel mixture adjustment screw? How the heck does that work if it's inside the fuel input? That seems ridiculously impractical!

I pulled the motor out and it does in fact have a Giannini head on it. So I guess the really hard pull action on the cord is to be expected.

One last quirk - the clutch wants to engage at idle. I suppose all I need to do is lower the idle and this will fix that problem. The clutch "shoes" (whatever they're called) look to be in very good condition with a lot of material still on them.
