Unhappy Cobra S4: What can I do to tone down the noise?

I have a Cobra S4. I love the thing, but I feel bad riding near people because of how terribly loud it is. This makes my options of where I can ride more limited.

Below is a link to the exhaust I'm thinking of getting. 1) Would it fit on my quad 2) would it help and 3) are there modifications I can do to this pipe to make it more quiet.

ww676 - Exhaust Pipe for 47cc Pocketbike w/CF Silencer

(I've also read something about steel wool and spray painting the carbon fiber??)

If I'm totally off base with this pipe feel free to suggest another one that would better fit my needs. Just know that I don't want to spend too much. I just want it to not sound like a snow blower...

Thanks in advance!

Re: Cobra S4: What can I do to tone down the noise?

I tried that pipe it will take alot of modification for it to fit the S4. I had to dent the top and right side of the expansion chamber to get it to fit and then it finally cracked so I had to go back to the stock pipe. Im thinking of doing some mods and just useing the silencer but we will see soon.

That's too bad. So I guess the new question is What pipe(s) will fit on the S4, with the least modification? (Thanks for the info, armoks.)

Let the pipe recommendations begin.

Re: Cobra S4: What can I do to tone down the noise?

a stock cag pipe fits with the use of some heat tape on the gas tank but the cags stock pipe has a far bigger belly then the pockquads pipes even though they look the same they're not! and since the cags belly is just the right size to fit you can do the stock pipe mod and it'll rip! or you can buy the pbu pocket quad race pipe which is pretty nice but also pricey.

i seriously dont think any other pipes will fit not without some serious modding thats too bad that chrome pipe wouldnt fit! its by far not the best pipe but at the same time its better then a stock cag pipe but prolly not a modded cag pipe.

and your gearing and chain thickness is whats causing it to bog so much like a snowblower. change to a cags chain and sprocket set with 6/78 gearing and you'll have a little beast! not to mention you wont go through clutches so fast. these things are what they are you can make them a whole lot better but due to their physical size and handling they do best at a top speed of about 30mph no faster!! and stock they're geared to do 47mph which it will never do so you're wasting away with the high gearing. going lower on the gearing will allow the engine to fully rev out which is what you want you'll also be able to go through grass and they're just so much funner with mad torque instead of top speed trust me they're no fun going 40mph on!!! they're fun when you're at a dead stop and hit the gas and it pulls a wheely! and can drift!

Re: Cobra S4: What can I do to tone down the noise?

Okay. So you're saying I either need to mod the pipe it came with or go with the PBU one?

And I have already done the gearing change. Makes a big difference in power, but seems just as loud.

If those are the options then I guess I'll need to wait till I can afford the PBU pipe.

Thanks.

Re: Cobra S4: What can I do to tone down the noise?

after looking at that pbu pipe again im not sure if it fits all model pocketquads! which totally sucks cuz it was the only descent pipe worth buying that would make a noticeable difference. every other pipe will need to be modded to fit i just know it will!

but no not the pipe you have buy a stock cag pipe off ebay or wherever you can find one cheap! hell even a used cag pipe as long as theres no dents and its not rusted out will work. the stock cag and pocketquad pipe look almost identical in a pic but in real life the cags pipe has a far bigger belly then the pocketquad and the header is way shorter also. so along with some other mods all i did was throw my stock cag pipe on my neighbors quad and it now rips! but it litterily comes really close to the gas tank so you'll need to use heat tape to keep it from melting. i think i also might have port matched the exhaust flange to the cylinder port. ohh and theres no stinger on it so its loud as hell!!! no matter what you do to these things they're gonna be loud. making them quiet will only ruin performance to the point where it'll be pointless and no fun to ride.

Thanks sr20hardbody. It sounds like I've got a plan of action, at least.

For what it's worth. I've been using an 8hp briggs muffler stuck in the end of the stock pipe. I had to remove the end cap first. It doesn't look to bad. I lose a little power. But it makes a big difference with the sound.
