Cool Misc. Cobra S4 questions & stuff.

I recently purchased a Cobra s4 from MPR (I Know MRP has probs). First off the ATV I received is not exactly like the one pictured. Mine has front brakes and a thumb throttle. I think it's a fair trade. Other than that I got what I ordered (with minimal damage).
I know I have a small alingment problem , toed in about a quarter of an inch, But at around 10 MPH I got that death wobble thing and got thrown off. Is there anything else with the suspension I should look at. Also, I managed to strip the bars when I went flying. Any thoughts on a fix? Last but not least. The chain...It appears that part of adjusting the chain requires bending the motor mount plate. Did I miss something here?
And if there is any one in the SE Wiscosin/NE Illinois area who has a place to ride let me know.

later, MM

Re: Misc. Cobra S4 questions & stuff.

Hey, I saw this post and had to reply. I live in Kenosha WI and I purchased a Cobra S4 from the same place. Mine did the crazy high speed wobble to and I did everything I could to the alignment to try to change it. My frame was bent in a few places, so I figured that was the issue. I did ALOT of upgrades to mine before I sold it. I installed the big head kit, with changing the piston head, Pocket bikes unlimited's bad *** exhaust, performance carb, i changed the reed and spark plug. It made a huge difference and looked awsome....especially with the torque. Email me if you have any more questions or some pics of my old cobra....nvmysi@hotmail.com

Re: Misc. Cobra S4 questions & stuff.

i dont know where to begin with how much tlc these quads need. i'll begin with the chain first off dont worry about alighnment they're all off about an 1" or more. the problem is the chain they come with is entirely too thick for the cag style engine. fix is swap to a #25 chain with 78 tooth rear cag sprocket then get a 6 tooth cag hp housing. expect to replace the axle bearing (6003zz)

once you get these parts what you wanna do is make the chain really tight! i know it doesnt sound right but its the only way to keep the chain from falling off after doing this you'll be able to ride on the roughest terrain.
so put the rear wheel set up on first then take out as many links on your chain till its a really tight fit. put the chain on first!!!! then tighten your motor down everything should be really tight to the point where its hard to spin the wheel dont worry the chain will stretch. once this is done expect to have some major fun ohh and a few engine mods wouldnt hurt. i did this to my neighbors quad and before you couldnt even push the thing to go after that it tugged my 245lbs butt so fast through the grass i almost wrecked into another neighbors garage!

ohhh and about the speed wobble i found the front suspension is not adjusted!!! you have to go over the front end and tighten every bolt/nut then adjust the shocks to where the threads are the same so count threads on the coilovers. then this is where the speed wobble comes in no matter how much you tighten the tie bars which is what the steering connects to to turn the wheel it doesnt tighten still loose as5 steering that has a ton of play. we used prothane bushings from a car (energy suspension kit) i had a couple left over which are heavy duty you can also find these in rubber install these in the gap on the tie rods and your steering will be solid! no more play and best of all no speed wobble steering dampers can also help. one more thing is lean the handlebars as far forward as possible without looking too goofy to help get weight on the front end so you can turn.

wheels were also loose and under inflated so pump them to the max and tighten them down!

Re: Misc. Cobra S4 questions & stuff.

Thanks for the replies. I actually got most of the probs worked out. I did the chain swap, running 78/6 w/25h chain. But thanks for the tip on keeping the chain on, I'll try it.

I changed out the bars for a set from a 16in bicycle. Really helps out. And no more hitting my knees when i turn.

I see what your talking about with the tie rods. I was trying to think of a solution.

Thanks
