My New PATV and First Impressions

Hello All,

I received my first pocket bike today. Actually, it’s a pocket ATV. One of the mini quads or Quadard as referred to in the user manual.

I must admit, it was a purchase off the bay. I won auction a few weeks ago and found this site and sponsors selling AFTER. That said, I thought I would try to provide information so you can make comparison of my bike to the other offerings:

44mm big bore cylinder.
No third bearing support.
Stamped clutch bell, not cast.
Standard air filter.
Tires are street treaded 3.50 x 4.00 both front and rear.
Rims are two piece. Front fits tire well. Rear is about an inch wider. The tire is over inflated to fit.
Fuel line was too long and pinched completely off.
Fuel filter was installed in reverse direction.
Exhaust is standard Cag.

There was no shipping damage. The only writing on the box was "Velocita, Made in China". There are mini dirt bikes (Cag style) sold under that same name. The PATV uses the very same body, seat and frame from the dirt bike. The frame just has some other pieces added to it for adapting the four wheels. Overall, the welding is good. Even the front fender from the dirt bike appears to be cut in half and used as the two rear fenders on the PATV. The front faring is unique.

The throttle is pretty cheap (weak). The cable keeps popping loose from the track inside the black box portion mounted to the handlebars. I need to find a fix for that.

I had to center the handlebars and set the toe in. The tie rods really need to be about 15mm longer. There isn’t much thread engagement and I can see them breaking in the near future under some heavy loaded steering. The tie rod ends are the bronze spherical bushing type.

Accessories include the user manual, fuel mixing bottle, tool kit and a sheet of go-fast decals.

For size perspective, I am 6’0" and right about 200lbs.

Overall, I’m very happy with the purchase and it looks like it will be a lot of fun. I paid $258 including shipping.

A few questions for the masses:
  • Source for the wheels used on this bike?
  • I’m in Southeast Michigan. I read in the racing forums that some clubs are allowing PATV’s. Are there any plans for a racing class to include these?
Thanks in advance,

Great review, it's the first I've seen on a pocket ATV. I'm not sure about the wheels, but the tires are the same as Go-Ped Powerplay "TT" tires, and the same as the Razor Pocket Rocket PR200 tires, so I imagine if you need the rims you could go to Dave's Motors and buy some type of Go-Ped Bigfoot style rim.

No problem at all! Are you looking for the rims or the tires?

Both, but rims first. I was thinking slicks for the future.

I'd be EXTREMELY suprised if there weren't slicks for 10'' Go-Peds, search around, and ask about them at scooterjunkie.com and/or gopednation.com.

Great review.
Do you know if a regular cag throttle will fit?
I received mine today from the same source for 270.00 shipped.
However the fairing was cracked during shipping.
Hopefully this will be taken care of in a timely manner.
I had a chance to ride one here locally and they really fly.
I already have a ADA 44mm headkit,ported carb,v-stack and filter for it.
PBU has a nice pipe for it but I'm going to see if my torker pipe will fit before dropping the 170.00 for the PBU Quad pipe.

Will do...
I have the fatty on my L7 nad and the torker on my HF.
Both are nice pipes but you may be correct about the fatty.
However the PBU pipe looks like it will make the Quad scream.

Cafe,

Just looked at the black and red L7 on the PBU site. There is a close up shot of the front. Throttle looks the same as what is on the PQ. Is the cable jumping track a common issue? Any fixes?

Ouch on the damage. Hopefully it does get taken care of promptly. I was a bit leary of buying the method we did.

I agree, the PBU pipe looks like the best choice by far for this bike. Reminds me of the Factory Pipe brand pipes.

Is the cable jumping track in the handle?
Have you taken the throttle apart to see what is happening?

Yes. There is a groove the cable rides in where it makes a 90 degree turn. When properly seated, the cable functions normally. It stays in the groove and opens/closes the carb slide fine when I twist the throttle and release. Problem is the throttle will also rotate forward. This puts extra slack in the cable and it comes loose from the groove.

I know there reallys isn't any reason to twist the throttle forward during normal operation, but there is nothing preventing it from over traveling forward and the problem keeps happening.

Trying to adjust the cable end at the throttle only opens the slide because when the cable is in the groove it's set up properly.

Any thoughts? Do the throttles on your bikes move forward also or do they have some type of positive stop?

My throttle on my quad is fine.
I just tightened the two screws in the cap and it is fine.
I've never had a problem with my throttle handle spinning on the handle bars.
On my first bike I had a problem with the throttle rotating counterclockwise so I just installed the brake lever over the top of it and tightened the brake lever.
It can't rotate down cause the brake lever will stop it.
Some of them have a set screw to lock them down.

Couple of corrections:

The clutch housing is cast, it's just painted black. I was comparing it to the natural cast ones that have a third bearing support.

BTW, where is the third bearing? There is one in the housing between the clutch drum and the pinion and the "third bearing support" bolts on the outside of the pinion. That makes two...

Tires are 3.00 x 4.00 - 10" tall. Thanks Mike.

My appoligies for the incorrect data in my original post.

Cool Re: My New PATV and First Impressions

You might want to check out a set of these: Carlisle Badlands. These tires were made especially small by Carlisle (one of the best off-road ATV tire companies) for the new Go-Ped GTR40 Trail Ripper. I know you (hopefully) won't be taking your pocket quad off-road, but these look nice, and shouldn't wear down too fast.
