s4 cobra quad won't go over 5mph

My s4 cobra quad is still in the break in stage but when I ride it it won't go over 5mph. I'm only 140 lbs. What do I need to do? thanks!

Re: s4 cobra quad won't go over 5mph

the stock chain and gearing that comes with the quad is crap its geared for 47mph which it'll never do and thats why you cant hit powerband and get it movin. also the stock clutch engages too soon for any real performance another reason its hard to get it going. the fix is a cag #25 chain and rear 74-80 tooth sprocket and a 6 tooth cag pinion.

also did you flush out your fuel tank and lines and get a good fuel filter before you put gas in it? if not then theres plastic shavings stuck in your petcock switch which will also make it run like crap with no power.

best thing to do when you first get these things is disassemble the carb fully and spray every part of it clean with carb cleaner. theres sometimes oily crud blocking the passages from the factory.

Re: s4 cobra quad won't go over 5mph

you should be able to hit 30mph+ only way to do this without running out of space is to change the gearing unless you wait forever for it to accelerate.

this high gearing and extra weight of the quad also will make the clutch burn out really fast.

how much do you weigh dragonkeep? my neighbor weighed in at 160lbs and had to wait the length of the entire road to hit powerband by then its time to stop this was with the stock gearing. after i changed the gearing and chain and did polini reed mod it was consistently hitting 32mph! and that 32mph was topped out at half the length of the road with my 240lbs a$$! it was also capable of riding through the grass after that.

by the way i dont mean street i mean road a private gravel road lol big diff.

Re: s4 cobra quad won't go over 5mph

hmm is it possible you got a 44mm stock bbk?

also i forgot to mention if you do switch to the cag chain you'll need either a chain tensioner or rollers the real blata quadard uses 2 rollers and 6/74 gearing stock. if you have the suspension quad best bet is a chain tensioner heres one i found that appears like it would work.

Kore Chain Reactor

im getting one and i'll let everyone know for sure if it fits cuz the #25 chain doesnt like to stay on with the suspension models unless you make the chain really tight.

Re: s4 cobra quad won't go over 5mph

I've been waiting for the winter to get over, so I can break my quad in and see just how bad it accelerates with it's stock gearing, and more than likley I'm going to switch the gearing. Which is why I've been wondering how good the cag chain will hold up compared to the thicker chain that comes with on the quad. So this kore chain tensior might be the answer. Definatley keep us posted on how good this works.

Re: s4 cobra quad won't go over 5mph

I used the 6/78 gearing and 25 chain as sr20hardbody suggested and my cobra S4 at least gets up and moves out now . I so far have not had a problem with the chain coming off . I'm also only on my 4th tank off gas and the chain has not stretched much from it's intial super tight position . I also messed around a lot and aligned it the best i could from the start. It goes well with this combo and is actually kinda twitchy at higher speeds anyway so i'm not going for speed with this little guy but off the line performance. Maybe more speed if I ever get around to making the front end more stable with less play in it . Toeing the tires in quit a bit did help high speed stabilty some though. I also ordered a hydraulic rear brake from HKmotos for it . I removed the fronts as they are useless. The back cable slows it but I want to be able to stop ! Mine came with the 44 engine also by the way .

Re: s4 cobra quad won't go over 5mph

Are any of the brakes dragging? The rear was dragging on mine after I got it, and after I adjusted it, it's quite a bit better. Spin the wheels and they should spin pretty freely.
