john the project sound nice but,,, that motor will not last very long...... unless you going to keep it strictly as a 1/8 mile drag bike.... any longer you may fry the motor...... after about 4300 rpms that motor will either self destruct or fry( if you run it longer then the 1/8 mile.... but if you put your gearing so it will stay 4000 or under @48 volt but it still going to pull some serious amps.... 24volts to 48 volts is a big jump for that motor.... be careful and keep your eye on that motor when you get it going... and use atleast 8 gauge wire cause the 12 may just burn upfrom pulling all those amps....
but i could be wrong with everything i write...... but would love to see the project making a run......

I've changed my setup a little, i'll be using 660 1.6 ah nicad cells for about 30 hp and running the three motors at 60 volts, i figure this will drop to 48 volts under load. But yes over running the motor is a very big concern of mine, and at these higher voltages i'll have to take some precautions.

The one thing I'm looking into as i mentioned in another thread is making my own 4 speed belt transmission so i can keep the motor revs down, and the torque up so i can operate at the peak hp of the motors. I might be able to place some sort of rev limiter on the motors, and if thats possible i'll do it.

The motors themselves will probably be re-worked quite a bit. The housing magnets will be epoxied to prevent them from shifting in the can and the brush rig will probably be changed with heavier gauge wire like you said, im thinking 6 gauge or larger. If at all possible im going to figure out a way to adjust the brush rig, so i can get a little better performance.

i my self am working on a gas bike cluch asbly for my winch motor i will be using in an upcoming bike for the 12v world record 14hp@8000rpm (badass), most gaspb hit at the same rpm so i will not even have to change its settings at all

what kinda belts will you use for your tranny set up, post some pics too. your the first i have heard of using belts we all could learn from what you do with it

godspeed,good luck

The belt trans idea is a concept i've had in my mind for a while. Basically there is 4 ratios all set on the same 2 shafts, input, and drive shaft. The trick is that all the belts are loose so they will make little to no contact unless they are tensioned to do so by a small idler pulley. When each idler pulley is pressed on the side of the belt it increases tension to drive the belt and the pulleys.

Re: MT44 project(ratbike 2)

good old surplus cencter *** com, lol
Aproldan they got da goodies!
maked me want to make a hydrolic pochit bike but the pumpmotor and smallest drive motor dont make enuff power to put out eneuff to drive each other....i realy worked on the idea for a couple weeks now....P-motor(4.5-6gph@24v) and the D-motor(10,000rpm@14gph)
all to gether the system produces 30hp at just under 100 pounds of dive train weight, any ways i may still use it for a speed record for a gocart progect...maby at over 140mph, keep in mind it is all torque power at high rpm!!!!!
