Painting Frame

I got bored and decided to rip my cag apart and paint the frame, forks, etc. I had some semi gloss black spray paint lying around so I decided to use it. I sanded and cleaned everything, then sprayed it. I let it set and put a second coat on it shortly after. I know it's spray paint, but the paint doesn't have any durability at all. It flakes off pretty easily.

Any suggestions as to how I should strip/repaint it? Thanks

Re: Painting Frame

did you use a good primer for the paint before you sprayed it?

Re: Painting Frame

Not only did I not use a good primer... but I didn't use one at all, haha. I guess I answered my own question as to why it is flaking off. The frame actually isn't flaking, it's just that the paint isn't hard. It can be scratched easily. That isn't due to lack of a primer, though a primer definately wouldn't hurt. I'm thinking of stripping the chrome parts that I painted and just leaving them chrome, and just spraying the frame with a couple coats of clear. What do you think?

Re: Painting Frame

What you should do is this.
#1. Sand very very well with 80 to 120 sand paper
#2. Buy paint prep wipes from your local automotive store and prep wipe it to clear it of all dirt and grime
#3. Spray a very light coat(should still be able to see old through it) of gray primer onto it.
#4. Let last step dry and then spray it again this time you should have one good coat on it.
#5. Give it a light sanding and then spray it again. Make sure to wipe of the dust from sanding.
#6. At this point you can paint the bike the color you want. Like the primer give it a light dusting.
#7. Let the above step dry and then give it a nice coat. Not to much to avoid runs.
#8. Sand it just a little clean it up and shot it with you color again.
#9. Let it dry a long while before you handle it and if at all possible leave it alone for one week for a proper cure and then shoot it with a clear coat using the "dust, coat one, sand, coat two" step u did with the primer and color.

TIPS- I like to use automotive spray paint from auto zone. Its better for these applications and the have alot better color and you can get them in spray cans also. Spray 6 to 8 inches away from object in one fluid motion side to side and let off the button once you pass the end at every pass. Never stop spraying in the middle of you object or start in the middle of the object. Take your time, the more time you spend making this look nice the better it will look, obviously. Any other questions just ask
