Elec Start Help wanted.

Hello, when i got my used x15 the kid trashed it, and the electric start did not work.

What i'm wanting to do is to beable to use the electrical start without having to use a key or switch or anything, and have its own seperate wiering system. I'm not too concerned with charging the battery as i ride, as i can charge that up with a charger

I would prefer to have it where i just touched a wire to the battery to get it to start.

Would you just have to connect the battery to the starting motor or is there more to it than that?

pics, drawings, diagrams help!

Re: Elec Start Help wanted.

I picked up a couple crashed cateye's in which all the electrical was removed or i removed it myself. The picture is a 12volt 60amp starter button, a toggle(kill) switch and a cigarette lighter installed in a cateye battery box. I was planning to use the cigarette lighter as a power source and just hook it to the cigarette lighter from a car for a jump ... but THIS IS A VERY BAD IDEA BECAUSE MOST CIGARETTE LIGHTERS CAN NOT HANDLE THE AMPS NEEDED TO RUN THE ELECTRIC START. I got rid of the cigarette lighter and went with a direct battery hook-up instead. On a 49cc cateye the fat wire going to the electric starter (next to the pull starter) is the red (positive) wire. The black (negative) wire is usually the fat one hooked to the transmission. If you hook a battery directly + (positive) to the fat wire coming out of the starter and the - (negative) to the fat black wire hooked to the transmission the starter will crank over. The kill switch hooks up to the 2 smaller wires coming out of the coil.

Re: Elec Start Help wanted.

Here is some pics of my skateboard setup. The skateboard originaly came with a 43CC pull start motor ... it does have a kill switch but no battery. I replaced the motor with a 49cc cateye style motor with an electric start on it ... had to make my own lift kit for the motor mount to get it to fit, but that would be a different thread. Anyway, I still wanted to use the electric start on the new motor so this is how i hooked it up:

Pic - 1) Shows black wire connected to transmission and wire connector
Pic - 2) Shows red wire on starter - this is the same red wire you see in the connector in pic 1
Pic - 3) Shows both connectors and starter button
Pic - 4) Shows everything hooked up - press the button and the motor cranks over
pic - 5) Close-up of switch mounted in small plastic spice bottle. Use a momentary on 12v DC switch at least 15 AMP but i highly recommend the 60 AMP ones.

Once she starts up i just disconnect the battery and starter switch. Tuck the wires and connector on the motor under the raised motor mount and i'm off. Once she warms up a bit all it takes is a little pull on the starter so i only use the battery when cold starting.

Oh yea, be sure to use at least 12 guage wire, preferably 10 guage ... notice the yellow connectors on switch and battery, you should be using yellow connectors and good wire to match.

Hey nice board man..............I only see one thing wrong with your setup.Thats your boost bottle and the way its mounted.............Boost bottles have to be mounted nippleside down;-higher than the carb so the tubes dont fill up with gas and oil mix and foul out the engine at WOT;-plus it looks kind of large unless that engines putting out some displacement and hp....other than that a very nice setup..................Peace

i got the motor with the boost bottle setup that way. i just got it running today and it didn't want to run quite right. it didn't want to idle very well then i would rev the engine and it would rev pretty high RPM ... let off the gas and it comes to a very fast idle for about 5 to 10 seconds then slow idle and die out. i was thinking that the problem may have something to do with the boost bottle setup ... thanks for the info.

Re: Elec Start Help wanted.

Hey Scooterscavenger: What are you using to charge the battery? Can the charging port be wired directly to the battery and mounted somewhere?

Re: Elec Start Help wanted.

I'm using An Alternate method for charging 12v 7a battery

i have not tried it .... but i don't see any reason why you couldn't wire the charging port directly to the battery.
