Well, one of the common tricks is called port-matching. What you're trying to do is make a smooth transition from one part to another, such as the carb-to-intake manifold or exhaust manifold-to-pipe match. (There's also porting the entire mouth of the carb for more air flow, but I'm not sure you're ready for that just yet. Don't worrry, hang out around here long enough and you will be.)
Another fuel trick is to take apart your petcock (the white knob assembly on your carburetor), fill the inside with J-B Weld, then drill straight down through the top of the petcock and straight out the bottom. For this mod, you need to purchase an inline fuel shutoff valve, as basically you're converting the original petcock into a straight pipe. Since you have the carb off the bike, anyway, move up to bigger fuel lines - generally 1/4" is the way to go instead of the tiny little 3/16" the bikes are sold with.
