my bike wont accelerate

hi there, im new to the forum and mini bike. just bought my friends for 100 bucks. i looked at the infermation plate on side and the model is MT-A1??.
when i first got it it was working pretty good only problem was if you accelerated to quick it would bog out and it would not go WOT. now the bike wont accel at all stalls if i give it gas. i can go like 5 mph thasts it.
if i lift the back endup it will rev up fine. i think it is the magnito. i looked at the plug it looks fine. dont no what they should be gapped at. bu also i was thinkin my friend didnt put enough oil in the gas. if anyone knows what the problem might be thanks in advance
-Garrett

Re: my bike wont accelerate

Sounds like a dirty carb. Did the bike have a old gas mix in the tank when you got it? Welcome to the site!!!

MT-A1 Cagllari/Daytona, 47cc, aka "Cag." I got several of them ...

Did you take off the carburetor and clean it out? Are you getting good gas flow through the carb? Take out the screw in the bottom of the bowl (the drain plug) and check fuel flow. Could be you're not getting enough gas to the carb on takeoff, or might be a clutch problem (which is also normal for these things).

Suggestion on posting the Photobucket links: use the IMG link - just copy the whole thing and paste it into your message, shows up better.

Welcome to the forums.

Re: my bike wont accelerate

Well, one of the common tricks is called port-matching. What you're trying to do is make a smooth transition from one part to another, such as the carb-to-intake manifold or exhaust manifold-to-pipe match. (There's also porting the entire mouth of the carb for more air flow, but I'm not sure you're ready for that just yet. Don't worrry, hang out around here long enough and you will be.)

Another fuel trick is to take apart your petcock (the white knob assembly on your carburetor), fill the inside with J-B Weld, then drill straight down through the top of the petcock and straight out the bottom. For this mod, you need to purchase an inline fuel shutoff valve, as basically you're converting the original petcock into a straight pipe. Since you have the carb off the bike, anyway, move up to bigger fuel lines - generally 1/4" is the way to go instead of the tiny little 3/16" the bikes are sold with.

Our "rep" is right here, daddy-o - post it everywhere with pride:

Re: my bike wont accelerate

so yesterday i had some time to pull the carb off. turns out the jet was clogged i cleaned that out then port matched the carb to the intake manifold and also there is a lil square lege in the inake manifold i went ahead an groung that down smoth.
i had to return all my throtle screws to all the way in in but idles fine now sits in one spot. after i took the bikie out and brought it back the the carb bowl was overfilling dumping fuel all over my kitchen.. i took the bowl cover off and bent the forks down. bike runs amazing now. and im off to buy the clutch upgrade and new exhaust. also does the 1/4' fuel lines and drilling through the fuel cut off and gorilla glue really help?

hey, take off the carb "bowl cover" (dont know what its really called)
turn the bike upside down there are 2 screws holdoing it on. after you get that off there is a lil gold rod, unscer that and clean it out with some gas or carb cleaner or a lil piece of wire be gentle withit though. that fixed my problem.

Re: my bike wont accelerate

"Bowl cover" - float bowl
"lil gold tube" - actually it's brass, main jet is screwed onto the bottom.

Carb cleaner is best, the wire idea is prone to scratching the inside of the jet.

Re: my bike wont accelerate

Take the top back off the carb - I bet you have the throttle slide (the black cylinder) turned 180*. The long groove faces the petcock, the cutout on the bottom of the slide faces the idle screw.

haha yeah thats what it was but does it matter if there is still some carb spray residue behind the choke. will it harm anything or catch on fire.

Re: my bike wont accelerate

blow out the residue with compressed air.

anytime you clean anything with small engine solvent it has to be dried.

Re: my bike wont accelerate

I was having the same problem today I have a MT-A2 I took off the carb and it was filthy so I cleaned it and I took a look at my air filter and there was a huge chunk missing in the foam I don't know where to get some new foam or if there is anything else I can use for now.

Re: my bike wont accelerate

Believe it or not, cut a section of pantyhose to fit over the mouth of the carb, Works very well .... As for the foam, try a motorcycle shop or small engine shop - they usually have that stuff.

Re: my bike wont accelerate

you can use just pantyhose if you like but remember to soak and wring out some 10-30 oil to catch the particles. (clean with gas)

you have to rejet for something like this.

Re: my bike wont accelerate

I cleaned the Carb and used pantyhose for an airfilter it started up and it took off very nicely I was suprised at how much power it had then after about 10 seconds of riding it started stalling on me again.
