No electric start on x7

hey guys, well this is my first post. i picked up a x7 on craigslist the other day for only $130(guy wanted $175) and everythings good on it jus had to get a new tank and throttle cable but i wanted to ask about the electric start. when i press the start button(throttle side) i get nothing, i have no prob pull starting it but would just b nice for electric start to work for the cool factor u could say

i was going to test it with my multi meter but my buddies got it. i checked all the wiring and all looks good, do u guys thing its just the starter itself?

thanks

Try holding in the left brake lever than hitting the starter button.

Re: No electric start on x7

well i plugged the charger straight to the battery and tryed while it was hooked up and jus got a clicking from the solenoid under the tank while holding the left brake. im guessing the battery didnt have enough juise since it was only on 5 minutes.

but how long should i let the battery charge till its done cause the charger is an older one and doesnt have any lights on it

Re: No electric start on x7

Try charging the battery for like 8 hours or even over night. Have you checked for any loose connections at all? A thought my X-7 woundn't hold a charge when i first got it and I seen the ground wire was grounded to the starter housing. I thought what an odd place to ground the motor to so i moved it to one of the motor mount bolts and it started holding a charge. Now I don't know if just moving it helped or if it was because I scraped the paint off around the bolt hole on the motor mount and got a better ground. Also my X-7 rarely starts the first time with the electric start but if I start it the first time using the pull starter it will start right up with the electric starter after and I mean right after kinda weird. So I guess what I'm saying is to check for any loose connection and check that you are getting a good ground. If the connections and ground ckeckout ok and it still don't seem to want to start with the electric starter after charging the battery over night test the battery with a volt meter if you can or take it somewhere that can test it for you. It should have 12 volts. If it does the battery is good and the solenoid is bad and if it don't the battery is bad.

thanks for that post, when i pulled some of the plastics off to clean the bike i got a glance of wher ethe ground it and i can remeber if was attached somewhere on the case under the exhaust but ill check again for sure tomorrow and check wire over again aswell. i gotta get my multimeter back so i can test some numbers with it too.

for charging, i havent delt with batteries for a while but is the battery supposed to get a lil on the warm side?

Re: No electric start on x7

Just clean both the ring connector and scrape some of the paint off around the bolt hole for the ground and reattach it just to make sure your getting a good ground.

Just how are you charging the battery and what type of charger are you using? If the battery gets alittle warm I would think that would be kinda normal.

ok ill do that with the grounds and check em out.

for the charger, its an older Century 1 Amp that has the 6v/12v selection and connects with clamps like u would have on jumper cables but smaller ofcourse

Ok that charger should be safe to use since it's the 1 amp type.
It does start ok with the pull starter right?

A matter of fact you can find on ebay a electric starter for the cag motor and I believe it comes out of Germany.

Re: No electric start on x7

Pull the pull start off and take alook into the electric start and see if anything look burnt. Have you checked all the electrical connections even by pulling on each wire at the connections to see if any are loose or burn marks? Try hooking the neg to the frame and the hot to the starter.
