Pull start cord not winding back up.

I've had this Cag for awhile now but once the pull cord ripped and I re-threaded it, the pull cord never seemed to wind itself back up, and now it doesn't do it at all. I think I know the error I made when putting it back together, but I'm trying to disassemble it and I just can't seem to. Here's some pictures to help better explain where I'm at.

Here's a video showing my problem: YouTube - Pocket Bike Pull Start

Theres a screw that I just can't seem to take out...

Any help on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Re: Pull start cord not winding back up.

Sorry but what's a screw extractor? And ya I think I'm going to end up getting a metal pull start.

And are pull starts pretty universal as far as sizing goes? Or is there a difference between 47cc and 49cc pull starts?

You can try to drill the head off the stripped screw. Just use a drill bit alittle bigger than the threaded part of that screw and try and drill in the center of the head of the screw. Than take it apart and put some vise grips on what is still there to get it out. Than just replace the screw

I'll try that Stray, thanks for the suggestion. And I'll get the pull start in the link if taking this apart and such doesn't work out.

Re: Pull start cord not winding back up.

Well now I wouldn't advise anyone to use a drill bit LARGER than the threaded part of the screw. First I would advise a hammer driver. That's a tool (about ten bucks) that is a screwdriver you hit with a hammer. It is a basic tool for pulling engines apart that use screws instead of bolts. You twist it one way and hit it & it'll loosen ANY fouled up screw. Twist it the other way & it tightens screws without stripping them. But if you decide to drill & use an easy-out extractor then use a bit that is SMALLER than the screw in question so the threads don't get drilled out. Now like any advise...just my humble opinion.

Yes a impact driver would work to. Great tool to have in your tool box. Hell after looking at the pic's again a big straight headed screwdriver may still work on it too.

Re: Pull start cord not winding back up.

Get a small chisel and use a hammer to tap the screw out. Tap it the way it unscrews to the left if that's the direction it unscrews.
I watched a person do that for my sons Carena when the screw stripped that held the ratchet (pull-start). He tapped the outter edge with the chisel until the thread broke loose then he just unscrewed it by hand.

Done it myself that way a hundred times. That's why this is called shadetree mechanics. But still, a hammer driver (impact driver) is a basic tool investment for motorcycle repair.

Warning!!!!! Under that screw is a long spring that can fly out. I just spent 3 hours in my garage trying to get it back in. Unless someone has a "magic trick" to getting this thing back in, save yourself massive frustration and buy a new $15.00 pull start.

Well, you could check this thread .......

How-To: Repairing Your Pullstart

Kinda surprised someone hasn't stickied that thread by now, or moved it to the "Shade Tree mechanics" section. Ah, well, I'm not a mod/admin.........

Btw, Alan, welcome to the forums.

Alright well it's been noted, I don't think I'm going to try anything more with it. I'm just going to be the new pull start once the weather gets a little nicer around here.

Re: Pull start cord not winding back up.

I have the same plastic piece of crap and the same thing happened to me. Tryed fixing it and yes the spring coil thing came flying out. Lucky I had a spare "plastic piece of crap" and the same thing happened...cord getting stuck. Come to find out I tightened the whole piece on to tight. The only problem I have know is that it is at times to hard to pull...rips my arm off.
