Question steering damper on C2/C5?

Hey guys,

anyone got any pictures of how a steering damper is installed on these bikes?I`m hoping to put on a china damper and want to see if the

i'll try to post a picture of mine a soon as i can! nothing to major to them! should be a hole in lower triple clamp? if not you might need to drill one. other then that one end clamps to the frame the other end goes thru the triple tree! hopefully i can post a pic here!

Re: steering damper on C2/C5?

I've not had to "yet"... Here is what I have heard, for the most part the B1 style bikes do seem to need a damper, Fitting it is just like stated before, usually bottom tree and inside or outside of the side frame, Most china dampers work ok, if you rebuild it with seals from whatever style damper it is a replica of they are good, some leak at the end caps though, Italian dampers are good right out of the box, and some even come with different seals or another type of adjustment to dial it in.

I've been waiting for a mini GPR top mount style damper for YEARS, and finally saw it, and then forgot where (website) I had seen it, and now cant seem to find it again.

but to sum it up, try to find a deal on an Italian damper.

If your bike is tank slapping you can try sliding the forks up or down a little in the triple clamps to shift the balance. Worked for me.

Re: steering damper on C2/C5?

it's not just about the weight, by moving the tree's up and down you are adjusting the Caster angle, caster plays a big roll in wheel snap back (which is a fancy way of saying "it wants to go straight") but I'm glad you brought this up because it doesn't get talked about much here..

God bless AT-135 (suspension class)

Re: steering damper on C2/C5?

You would have to find the happy medium between a drag bike,(lots of angle 38-45 degrees) and a dirt oval bike (has very little angle10-15 degrees) the drag bike won't wiggle at all, but won't turn at all either. Where as the dirt track bike will turn like nuts but I wouldn't want to go too fast on it, very unstable.

So you see, changing the steering rake angle is the most drastic adjustment to handling, and when the wheel base changes due to moving the rake angle, this also changes handling. The longer the w/b, the longer it takes to turn, and the shorter the w/b the quicker the bike will turn. So be sure to think it out. In our club w/b is 29" max.

Re: steering damper on C2/C5?

I would disagree that it is a drastic thing to do as i found it makes little difference to the steering rate. Makes sense to me that on abike that requires so little steering input through the bars already, changing the rake angle by probably not even half a degree won't change the world. In my experience, dropping the front down makes the front end feel more planted in the corners but it can make it more skitish because of the reduced trail and you can lose some braking efficiency.
Mine was slid down almost 2 inches and handling awesome everywhere except one corner where the bars were slapping violently on exit. So i slid the bike back up about an inch and cured it. i can only conclude that the front just floats better over that section now.

Any way its deffinitely worth playing around with. Steering dampers are restrictive, a sweet handling bike is a sweet handling bike

Here's mine installed on my bikes. I could live without it on the stock 45cc (otherwise know as the 50cc) but not my modified 45 C2. It's wheelie happy at any speed and has helped me many times. Hope this helps...

Re: steering damper on C2/C5?

The mounting hardware should come with the damper. I drilled a small hole through the frame from top to bottom. Used a long screw and nylon nut to lock it on. It was easy to install...

I've seen the dampers on eBay but I bought mine from Damian when XP Bikes was around. I'll try and track one down for you...

Here's two places that still sells them.

USA - 4strokepocketbikeparts

Canada - STEERING DAMPER 002

Re: steering damper on C2/C5?

Hey Nos, could you get some pics of the way you mounted it to the frame.
I mean closeups with the damper and maybe the bodywork removed. I have been reluctant to drill any holes in the frame for fear the frame might bend with a clamp load from a bolt or the stress of the damper.

Thanks.
