Alright Whatever you say. No need to flip sh*t. I'm just saying maybe you should of named your thread "Free Mods Without taking Parts Off Your Bike!!!"
Besides who cares you have unlimited tread space anyways. If you don't want to read it just ignore it.
The racing style clutch is a great one Tony!
Way to collect a few of the goodies of of past posts... This will be a super collection of freebies/cheap mods! And AaronLucia's idea shaving off the 100+ plus lb of rider weight will probably make the biggest difference (free or paid for!). ;-)
yea thats the cheepest way and by the way the first mod i did to my bike is take the rear tire guard off not for the weight just because i think it looks a lot cooler with out it. the guard and plastic there i think makes it look more like a toy
How about starting a "removing electronics" thread?
That's a great Idea!
Since my X7 is Race only, I would like to simplify my wiring harness. However, I am not too electrical savvy. So I would appreciate anyone that is wiling to post something or has some great tips of either building a harness (that I could do if instructed) or hack up the current harness.
well im not positve but if you dont have any head lights or ele start or anything you dont need prety much any of the wires cept any coming out of your motor and what they go to id keep there but the battery could go and for the key you could just make a switch. some one correct me if i wrong
Since I have a CatEye and not an X-7, my references will be from my bike. I also haven't stripped the wiring on this bike, but I have wired a couple VW's from scratch, so I have done some wiring and can give general advise better than giving a detailed step by step how to for your bike.
I think if you pull the electrical parts that you wont need a replacement harness. I would clip individual items out, and just seal off the cut ends with liquid electrical tape.
We'll say for descriptive purposes, I'm going to strip off all the lights, and leave my starter. If you want to remove your starter too, it's already been covered in this thread (posts# 10-14).
First make a list of everything you want to keep, that needs electricity. So all I'd need power for is the starter. Just run a single hot wire to it, with a push button switch in the middle. Now thats a light wiring harness!
Trace the wires from each feature back to it's power source, and clip them there. Take out the Battery/controller from the box (now you have a little glove box)! Fuse, voltage regulator, flasher unit, everything can go!
I'd replace the brake levers with Mtb levers instead of trying to unwire the brake light switch. That will save you some time/trouble and give you a better lever.
That should pretty much get rid of everything you don't want!
NOTE: I'm not looking at your bike, so anything you clip you are going to have to deal with! So make sure you want it taken out before cutting out the wiring. Take on this project only if your comfortable wiring.
Final NOTE: Like I said, I have not done this, but it seems pretty straight forward... If anyone who's done it has anything to add, please feel free to jump in!
If you remove the starter and all the electronic you will not need a harness. The only wires that you need on the bike is the wire that comes off your ignition coil, you can put a regular dirt bike kill switch on the bike with those wires and not have a key or wires at all.
Here is another free tip that I can contribute, check your squish, many midbikes have over 1mm of squish and optimally you want it to be in the .5mm-.7mm range so check it and remove gasket as needed or make a thinner gasket if your piston hits.

How much did this increase your compression? Also not having a gasket is a bad idea. Use some silicon gasket sealer or an equivalent to act as a gasket if you decide to take it out completely.
I remember rewiring my old dirtbike. It use to be a dual sport so it had all the road equiptment which was removed before I got the bike. But they left the wiring so i decided to clean it up a little. Taking off the extra wiring lost my bike 5 lbs. literally.
if you take out the gasket just use Yamabond or make a thinner gasket, these engines have too much tolerance which is why they perform so different from one bike to another.
about the tip with the mixing cotainer, can i use the cap with the same measurements and everything else you did from my synthetic oil bottles cap? my oil bottle, with cap, is 4 1/2 in. tall and my caps diameter (not circumference) is 1 1/4. would this work just as well as you explaind it, same instructions and all???????
i took off every single wire and battery box of my cateye. since i took off the key alll i had to do is pull start it like normall and then to kill it i would just put on the choke and give it a little gas. it took off 10-15Ibs
to kill it with out choking it you can use the electric starter button and wire one side to the positive wire coming from the magneto, and wire the other side of the starter button wire to the brass screw coming from the engine. when you press the button it would kill the engine asap.
this info is assuming you took off ALL the electronics including the starter. its also assuming that you have a 49cc engine.
trick tip if you got any old under armor I perfer black take the plastick light of and then take of the plastic lense cut a good portion of fabric out and then tie it around the lense so the not is facing inside of the lights tie it tight and put the lnse back onto the light fixture will give you a nice custom racing look
