How To- Fork Gas Shock MOD (W/PICS)

Fork Gas Shock MOD Detailed Tutorial Ver. 0.7

This is an easy one here. A 5 out of 10 Difficulty.
Most parts can be found at you local OSH hardware store.

Be sure to buy these before you start...Around .50 cents

When drilling or grinding , always wear eye and hearing personal protective equipment (PPE).

Ok enough on that lets begin....Original bike forks
http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep1.jpg

*Step one get your shocks (AutoZone, CarQuest, Kragens for a 1989 Lincoln Town Car Aluminum Hood assist). Like these..

*Remove Front Fairing

*Now enlarge the upper hole in the fork bracket with a 1/4" Cobolt or Metal bit.

http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep3.jpg

*With that same bit enlarge the Upper Hole in the Speed Sensor
http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep4.jpg

*Get the Srew and Nut that we purchased from OSH
http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep5a.jpg
http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep5c.jpg

-notice that one side of the nut is beveled
http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep5.jpg

-the beveled side will be facing the shock, not the flat side
this bevel will force the shock to center itself on the undersized screw and reduce free play under load. (note* in these images the nut is inserted on the
opposite end of where they will be. This end was better for Pics, that's all)

-here is the proper order of installation.
http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep6b.jpg

*Remove the Hex screw from the Lower fork clamp, slide(or hammer) the slim side of the shock into the clamp space and re-attatch the hex screw. Leave it loose for now so you can manipulate the lower section easily.
http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep7.jpg

*Reinstall the Original Lower Speed Sensor screw to allign your new oversized holes.
http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep8.jpg

*Now install the new screw and nut we purchased from OSH in the order as seen above. You may need to apply some weight to the forks to get the holes to line up, but just long enough to get the nut in place.
And Tighten.
*****CAUTION*** Do NOT over tighten as you may crack you speed sensor the you are really @#$#%$#-ed!
http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep8a.jpg

*Go back and tighten that Hex clamp screw we left loose.
TAAADAA Right side Finished!
http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep9.jpg

Now ON to the Left which is a bit tougher...No worries

Since there is no original hole to use, we will have to make one.
Line the shock up next to where it will be installe and mark the center of the hole for reference. Besure leave enough room for the Brake caliper and shock to be happy together.
*Center Punch your mark many, many, many times. Dont want that bit jumping around.

http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep10a.jpg

*With a small bit working your way back up toward the 1/4" bit drill out your hole. Be sure to give you drill and bits breaks as not to heat stress them.
Our new 1/4" Hole.
http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep11.jpg

*Now repeat all the steps from the right and youve got it!!!!!!!
Consider while you are down there dressing up those ugly(IMO) Fork Boots.
http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep12.jpg

-All dressed up and ready for the streets!
http://www.beautifulbraids.com/images/GAZstep13.jpg

I hope you find this helpfull and please help create new MOD TUTORIALS
on things you like!
Take Care!!

BTW: Your Front end will feel realy stiff but it does soften up at speed. None of the shocks last a lifetime so they will have more play as they mature.

Oh yeah, Outlaw50 gets credit for the fork boot idea although mine are alittle different.

Thanks to Blue Rocket and OutLaw 50
for their info in this MOD.

I haven't heard from him for a while. We used to race with him back in the day. Really cool cat. I hope he and his son are well.
