How-To: Rocket Key install on X2 CVT

Everyone has the basic concept down, but not one specifically for the midbikes with CVT. Didnt take any pictures, but I will explain in detail.

First off, tools. Dont even think about this install without an Impact. There is globs of glue/locker on the bolts.

This is what you'll need:

Air or cordless impact
8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 14mm, and 17mm sockets
extensions, if your hands are as fat as mine
6mm Hex tool (allen or socket type)
Phillips screwdriver
pry tool or a flat tip screwdriver
pliers
2 M8 x 1.25" x 80mm bolts

1. For ease sakes, I took off all the panels (fairing and gastank cover).

2. There is a main battery harness under the gastank cover. Make it a habit of disconnecting it before performing any mod.

3. Loosen the rear wheel. The main bolts are 17mm, and the tensioner is 10mm. (tensioner is the bolt sticking straight out from the swingarm) This should loosen the chain.

4. The rear mount for the tranny is held on by 2 8mm bolts. You can remove the bracket by using a 6mm Hex key and 13mm socket on the back.

5. 6 bolts on the CVT cover are 8mm. Once removed, on the frontmost pulley (the larger one on the right side) there is 4 8mm bolts that hold the tranny to the engine. They are behind the pully. There is no need to remove the pulley, but I did remove the belt to make it easier.

6. Once the tranny is free from the engine, remove it at a slight angle to remove the chain from the back.

7. There is 4 8mm bolts that hold the engine in. 2 are long, 2 are short. Might be a good idea to replace these bolts with higher quality ones and some threadlocker. 2 Long ones go on the tranny side, the 2 shorter ones on the pull start side. Make sure during reassembly you ground the wire found on the front left mount.

8. Loosen the exhaust mount under the seat. I didnt take it off, but if your installing a tuned pipe, then might as well.

9. This is where the prybar will help. While holding the top of the motor, pry the engine out of the mount (carefully of course) until its free and loose.

10. I didnt remove the engine, tilted it back far enough to get to the bolts and do the mod. Your choice from here.

11. The flywheel/clutch cover comes off with 2 Phillips screws at the top. Carefully while taking this off, as there is 2 alignment dowels that need to be in place.

12. 2 bolts on the clutch are 17mm. Remove the clutch.

13. The flywheel bolt is 12mm. Its in the dead center.

14. Using the same holes where the clutch mounted, thread in the 2 M8 bolts you picked up. Look behind the flywheel to make sure you are going to hit a flat piece of metal. There is little ridges and if you thread the bolt into it, it will crack. The flywheel will pop off pretty easily.

15. I took out the stock woodruff key by a pair of pliers. They happen to be a good set of Channel Locks. Many Ive noticed do it with a pick.

16. Place the rockey key in its place, with the offset facing your left. Getting the flywheel back on shaft is the tricky part. First, I turned the shaft to the point where the flywheel would align with the key, and the magneto was on top. With a business card over the magneto, I shoved the flywheel back on, making sure it was centered on the rockey key and replaced the flywheel bolt. Tighening the bolt will seat the flywheel back on the shaft.

Viola! Now, replace everything you just took off. Sorry, dont have any pictures for everyone, but I hope I explained clear. Any questions, PM me.
