My $100 X15 Thread

Okay, after making a few post i decided to make a journal posting everyting about my X-15/R-32. Upgrades, Questions, Tips, and comments are all welcome.

After buying a used X-15 for $100 from a kid who did not take very good care of it, the 15 desperately needed some work.

I have resolved the Smoke comming from the exaust manifold. I belive some oil was leaked into the chamber from sitting out for a while, after kicking the bike and letting it run for awhile, the smoking stopped.

The Front right Fork was bent, so i ordered a new pair for an X-19 (it should be the same) for $40, from HoleShotzPerformance.com so they should be in within a week.

Re: My $100 X15 Thread

This afternoon i did get the bike running and rode it around for a little bit. It is very boggy, so i will have to do some carb adjusting.
I dont want to ride it to much because i dont feel safe riding it with the bent front fork, as i cant really turn left.

Problems i'm having right now are that the choke keeps closing when i try to pull the choke up, so for starting it i have to hold the choke up with my left hand, right hand giving it some gas, and trying to kick start it all at the same time. And the bike is "bogging" down, i will try to do some major carb adjusting at a later time.

The MotoGP shift pattern is kinda confusing, as i'm not used to the one up, three down, but its a cool feature they added to the bike. (and there is a reason for that style shifting)

I also removed the stock fuel filter, which is basically useless and replaced it with a fuel filter from a jetski. But for some reason gas does not want to go into it very well, When the bike is running does gas get sucked from the tank into the carb? I also cleaned out the tank and checked the fuel lines.

I think there may be fuel leaking from the cab into the air intake tube, is this a major problem? any help would be apreciated

I will aslo change the oil tomorrow, i'm sure it could use it.

as as far as the plastics, i was thinking of doing a repaint of metalic orange if i can find the right color i want

Re: My $100 X15 Thread

yoea i would not ride it vary fast at all with the bent fork! but also do keep the choke up pull it up and twist it to the right like 1/4 turn then it wil stay in place. but dont try to go fast withthe choke on cuz the choke will make it go slow.

heres a link

Re: My $100 X15 Thread

Okay, well today I put on a new fuel line that i picked up for $3.00,
and bought a few 6mm black hex bolts, nuts, and washers, to hold the body on. Cost: $4.00, but i will need some more. Fuel line is professional grade, better than the rubber tubing, as it will less likely crack and more resilant to heat. I'm also planning to put a fuel cut of switch to the bike if i can find one for a decent price, to help solve the mystery fuel leak.

Here are pics of the new fuel line and the bike with the tail on.

Re: My $100 X15 Thread

12-8

I have great news, i belive i have discovered the problem of the gas leak and why the bike wont start. (i feel dumb for just now discovering it)

Okay, the stock fuel line that goes from the fuel filter to the carb is made out of plastic. when they make the hose they just melted the end and stuck it on the carb. They did not make the hose snug at all so gas had been leaking from the end of the hose and not been going into the carb. Hence the bike was not getting gas so it would not start.

So later today i'm gonna run to a local KTM shop and pick up some fuel line. The guy there said they sell fuel lines that are (metric) 6mm inner by 8mm outer. I will meausre it and check to see if it will fit then do another post later.

Re: My $100 X15 Thread

Whoo! okay, just basically took out the carb, cleaned it, and redid the entire fuel line system with durable fuel lines, pulled up the choke, 1 kick and its running! So this afternoon i will spend the rest of the day adjusting the carb, test riding, and hopefully putting the rest of the plastics on! I'll post pictures of it after i get all the plastics put together! after i get it running well i plan to try to redo the entire elcetronics of the bike. (none are hooked up at the moment)

Now that i have that out of the way, What would be a good first upgrade? I was thinking an pro airfilter to replace the one that i made out of an old underarmour shirt, and a seat. (the bike didnt have either when i picked it up)

I'm going to Washington DC all next week, so if i order now, parts should be in by the time i get back. I would not like to spend any more than $100 right now. (at least untill i get a new job). I might just end up selling my cat and its part bike to help buy new upgrades.

NICE TO HEAR YOU GOT IT RUNNING GOOD! and about the fuel lines i would just bring your stock one and the ones i got didnt fit too good on the gas tanks cuz te tubes were to small so i just the line up now fits great. also they should have an airfilter at the dirtbike shop i got an uni airfilter and it works great. but you wont really notice much of a difference between the shirt probably.a new sparkplug would be good also to get

Re: My $100 X15 Thread

DANG! These things are FUN! i'm impressed that the little 110cc has some kick behind it. I now see why so many people here race these. The motor is perfect for curvy tracks, but cant take tight corners to well. I ran out of bolts to put the plastics on, so later tonight i will run into town and pick up some more bolts and some locktie.

Meanwhile, here is my mini-drag strip (aka my neighbors driveway) that i'll be running on untill it gets dark. an my re-worked fuel line.

Re: My $100 X15 Thread

First off: Got my new forks in.

Shout Out to x18parts.com

ordered and to my door in 3 buisness days!

Well packaged and care in shipping

Okay well i got my forks in today. Took of the old bent ones and put on the ones from an X19. They are the same, but the X19 forks felt very stiff compared to my 15. So if anyone knows how to give them a little more cusion, please tell.

First Pic: my new forks next to the bent one, yeah its bad

Second: The bike with the original forks off.

Third: There are little pins on the bottom tripple that keep the bike from turning at extreme angles, so i sawed those bad boys off.

Fourth: The new shocks on the bike. (they even have little stickers on em)

Fifth: Is the bike only with its tail on.

Right now i'm in the middle of putting all the plastics on, but it started sleeting and it got to cold to stay out in our shop. So i will finish up in the morning and post pics. I think my next project will be to make a custom exaust using an old KTM dirtbike muffler, and possibly after december, painting the bike none other than Kawasaki Green

Yeah, its pretty cool, and i did replace the stock fuel line by the carb, the yellow bits are just there to help keep it on tight.

The mini drag strip is a little over 1/4 mile, so its plenty to do speed runs, i usually slowly get up to speed then hit that small curve then tuck and see how fast i go. But i only have the stock speedo, my bro's gf has a gps, so when she is over i'll steal it for a bit.

Re: My $100 X15 Thread

Well after some thought, and imput from cam and other people, ive decided to hold off on doing the undermount exhaust, too much work for little performance. So, i decided on doing a carb upgrade. The problem is, i'm not sure what kind or what size i need. Will a new carb help out my top end speed at all?

i found this one on ebay, eBay Motors: MIKUNI 22MM CARBURETOR CARB XR50 CRF50 70 KLX110 TTR90 (item 250340105120 end time Dec-15-08 22:20:13 PST)

its $30 plus shipping, should i buy?

Re: My $100 X15 Thread

well what do you mean in top speed? have you had enugh room for top speed? cuz mine goes really fast and i havent got the rpms all the way up. but if you are at reallly high rpm. then it wont really help with your speed. if your gearing is good and you just need more power then carb is good. but carb is good either way. but i dont knwo on the size. i am just gunna get mine from holeshotz

heres the kit

Holeshotz Performance - Fill your need for speed! - 26mm Mikuni Carburetor Kit

the 26 is to big but this is taper bore so at the bottom it is actually a 22mm carb.

Re: My $100 X15 Thread

well, i'm not sure what the deal is, most people say they can get up to 50 on the stock bikes, but so far my speedo has only tapped 40 once, when i shift into 4th, the rpms dont seem to pick up any, it just goes at a low growl, havent topped out rpm's in 4th yet. whats the problem? should i adjust my carb? and how do you adjust it for max performance?

Re: My $100 X15 Thread

its just the ****** stock carb, i had the same problem with my 15. go ahead and get that 22mm carb you listed earlier, it will work wonders on your bike. i gained alomost 9 mph from a carb and airfilter change. dont go bigger then a 22 on sotck motor, you will never get i right.
