Adj main jet tunning question.

I know exactly what the jet does and already have it installed correctly. but my question is what exactly are you looking for when you tune it? top speed? acceleration? i tried messing with it for the first time this weekend and it seemed to run the same where ever i put it. I really wish i had my tach already so i could know for sure if the RPM's were going any higher.
Its just that i see people posting they are running too rich or too lean. How the hell do ytou know if your rich or lean. I mean on a car you can't tell if its rich or lean unless you have a wide band O2 sensor. (well if its blowing black smoke its really rich).

Set it, then take a run with the bike, then park it. Wait till it's cool first, or if you dont mind the pain, take out the spark plug and analyze the color.

Black = Too Rich
White = Too Lean
Light Brown = Good

If you're not satisfied, clean the spark plug with a wire brush then put it back in and repeat the steps.
