Lightbulb Air Filter Relocation?

This might be silly, but is there a way to relocate the air filter on a PB? It just seems that all engines would work the same...the less it has to suck for air, the more power you can save.. I was thinking that maybe a cheap radiator hose from a car adapted to the filter, then the filter mounted up in front of the cylinder like a ram air kit.Run the hose around the engine and to the carb. Some places will custom bend radiator hoses anyway you like. the air would be colder since it's not being passed over the engine, and everyone knows cold air is more rich in oxygen.. am I on to something here? Just a thought...

i would think on this small of an engine any gains you would see from relocating it to colder air would be negated by the excess tubing...unless yer bike runs really hot for some reason...

i got a bike that has the filter sitting in front, one of the few benifits that is owning a cateyes :P

When installed an exhaust pipe, i had to relocate the filter because the pipe got in the way of the filter. I purchased a 90 degree angle plastic sink pipe and attached my filter to that and used small radiator pieces to hold the pipe and filter together. The 90 degree forced the filter to relocate to the side of the bike, right behind my right foot peg.

Then i purchase a jetpro pipe and was able to put the filter back to where it orignally belonged.

but yeah, the engine is so small, i don't know how much OUTSTANDING gains you would get from relocating the filter...

Good luck...

I've been thinking about this mod for my bike too. It has an air box, but no air filter. And I think that lacking a filter isn't the best idea for my little carb. Especially when bits of dust can seem like Godzilla walked in through the intake for carb this size.

One thing that worry's me is the size of the air tube. I want to make sure it's of a large enough diameter that it doesn't restrict air flow. And then placement is another problem that I haven't looked at solving yet. I like the ram-air idea. I don't know of the performance impact on a relatively slow moving bike, but there should measurable performance, right? Maybe only a dyno can see it, but if the air is cool and compressed, it should be better for the motor I'd think.

wat u said earlier about a ram air kit is wrong

and ram air uses a hose or something to direct cold air from a different location to the filter

a cold air intake moves the filter to the cold air location

the easier way would be the ram air style because all u need is a bendy hose, then clamp it onto the filter sumhow and direct the opening of it to the front of the bike(or another place with cold air)

Thanks for the input, and the clarification. Has anyone tried either of these methods? Maybe if it doesnt help any, its still a cool mod to have.... A ram-air Pocketbike, lol.

i tried it, but it looked kinda stupid...

cuz on my cateyes(midbike), the filter gets cold air already because its located at the front of the bike...

so my ram air hose served no real purpose

i need to devise a workable solution to this.

I too am at the dilemma of no room on between the carb and the rear frame.

is relocation the key?.....stay tuned to find out.

lets work with each other on this one.

You guys are not alone, i tooke dimensions and im trying to design a pipe that goes either to he side or to the bottom to relocate the air filter, maybe a pvc pipe, if you heat it a lil you can twist it how ever u want.

OK i'm going to go to the local stores this weekend and try to accomplish this.

it'll be a little different on an X7, but those tubes that he used should vary in length, shape.

ok this i know about my car when i installed the cai on it.....a longer intake tube increases low end torque and shorter intake increases throttle responce.....i dont know how much of this applies to 2 stroke engines but is food for thought....

It does the same for 2-strokes, longer intake and exhaust usually means more bottom end

Does the longer intake tube decrease top end also? Or does that stay the same while increase low end?

On My air cooled C1, I noticed the engine is tilted backwards. (Are all of them like that?) I was wondering if cutting off the engine mount and welding on a new one so the mounts are parallel to the ground would solve the air filter spacing problem? No doubt it would require the pinion chain to be replaced and the chain guard to be mounted differently. Then hopefully a cag or some other exhaust would fit without any mods. Has anyone tried this? Is it a mistake?
