Which mod did you try, davation's mod or juanito's polini mod? I've done davation's mod, and yes, you do feel it on the low end and midrange. Smoothed things out a lot, huh?
thanks for the reply.
well at the moment there is nothing else done to my bike and it seems like relatively easy mod to get me going. later on i was thinking about experimenting with my own expansion chambers and boost ports etc.
There's a whole lot of mods that you can do to the bike - it all depends on what your limits are, and how much you're willing to do or spend. here's three relatively cheap and easy ones to do:
-Put sealing washers on every engine and exhaust bolt to lessen engine vibration. You'll need longer engine bolts (6mmx20's, original engine bolts are 6mmx15's), plus a couple of 5mmx10's for the top engine mount.
-Petcock mod (check a/c mods section at top of page for sticky on this.)
-Port match exhaust pipe and exhaust manifold on cylinder head.
-Gasp cap breather mod: drill out the breather hole in the gas cap a little more, enough to put a piece of fuel line in it. When running, these little engines create vacuum, and the pressure in the tank is enough to kill the engine.
sorry guys i just realised mine is not a cag but it is a x7 i think (looks like an r1, little bit bigger). will this reed mod still be a good idea? also has anyone experimented with making their own expansion chambers?
I dont have the tools to cut out the center bar and cut the green polini reed the right way, so in an effort to keep it cheap as possible is someone willing to do the labor for me and sending the finished product. I probably will just pay for you to order a new stock reed block unless you have one sitting around as well as for the reeds. get back to me if your interested at briandbailey@comcast.net . thanks
Okay, so here is a fairly easy mod for the reed that will have you going without the pricey Black Widow reeds. Here is how you do it:
Buy a fiberglass or carbon fiber reed to replace the original reed. Take the stock metal reed out, clean it, and then draw on it so that the drawing resembles the smaller petals of the black widow reed. Cut it alone the lines with either dikes or a rotary tool. I used a dremel tool with cutting disc and small dia grinding wheel. After cutting the excess off, lightly sand the edges so they don't damage the fiberglass or carbon fiber reed. And then that is it. You now a cheep multi-petal/stage reed for your cag or whatever.
when you install the reed, it should be closest to the reed stop block. I will be posting some drawings and pictures later on.
hay if you can help me i dont know were to buy 4 side motor mounts you or any one nows p;ease help me
Ummmm........... **looks at the title of the thread - "Cheap Triple Stage Reed Mod" - then looks again at Josh1337's post - "hay if you can help me i dont know were to buy 4 side motor mounts you or any one nows p;ease help me"**
So .... let me get this straight. Cheap triple stage reeds = four side motor mounts? I think you posted this in the wrong thread, josh .... try Dave's Motors or ScooterParts4Less.
tried this mod on my cag awhile back. i used a fg reed, but the reed cracked and broke off and flew into the case. i now have the stock metal reed in it (with the custom cut metal dual stage) and it does seem to pull off the line better and smooth out the powerband. great mod, its a must do if you dont have the money to spend on a 40$ aftermarket dual stage reed set up!!!
If you do it with the stock tin reeds, it works out pretty well. I did this mod on all three of my bikes. Did you leave the stock reed stop on it? If you take the stop off, sometimes the reeds can over-extend and break, kinda like what happened to your fiberglass reeds.
So can I do this mod using two pairs of tin reeds instead of a fb and a tin one? I don't have access to fiberglass or carbon sheets, but I have a couple of tin reeds spares...
Yep, works just fine with two tin reeds. You just have to place the modded reed in between the reed stop and the stock reed. It works VERY well - I've done this to all my bikes so far (except one, cuz i didn't have a spare reed for it).
You'll be very pleased with the performance - I can pretty much guarantee it. You'll notice a smoother powerband, and virtually no top end reed flutter.
