Okay, so here is a fairly easy mod for the reed that will have you going without the pricey Black Widow reeds. Here is how you do it:
Buy a fiberglass or carbon fiber reed to replace the original reed. Take the stock metal reed out, clean it, and then draw on it so that the drawing resembles the smaller petals of the black widow reed. Cut it alone the lines with either dikes or a rotary tool. I used a dremel tool with cutting disc and small dia grinding wheel. After cutting the excess off, lightly sand the edges so they don't damage the fiberglass or carbon fiber reed. And then that is it. You now a cheep multi-petal/stage reed for your cag or whatever.
when you install the reed, it should be closest to the reed stop block. I will be posting some drawings and pictures later on.
nice representation, very discriptive, but just one thing, with having the triple stage reed you made or even having the original black widow reeds, you don't have to put the reed stopper back on. the second set (which are the shorter ones making it a triple stage) of reeds over top of the first ones, acts as a reed stopper along with making it a triple stage. other than that, GOOD JOB!
I was wondering about that stopper, good point. B/c from the pictures of the black widow reed, the screws were in it and visible.
But on the other hand, i am not sure how strong the second reed on the BW reed is, and with the stock reed being cut, it might be safer to leave the stopper on so it doesn't wear out the reeds and snap them off.
this is interesting. i just bought couple ADA fiberglass reeds for my bikes! and have about 20 stock reeds to play with! im goin to whip out my dremel and do some cutting!
your welcome. Becarefull when cutting. I did the rough cuts using my dremel with a reinforced cutting disc, and then shaped it up with a small (pink) dia grinding stone for the dremel like the ones sold for sharpening a chain saw blade.
Yes, i did use the stopper b/c the stopper prevents the reeds from wearing out prematurely. I learned this from the 2stroke tuners handbook.
btw the reed limiter also takes up crank case volume. and i have the BW triple stage reeds and black part is made out of carbon fiber and i compared that part to the stock metal reed and the metal is soooo much more flexible then the carbon fiber. so for the people doing this mod, put the reed limiter back on just as a precaution. i personally do not use the limiter because the BW reeds are strong enough for the job, and i haven't had a problem with them since. and daviation VERY clever mod!!!
i used this one on my bros newly rebuilt f/f and it works very well. i was amazed at it performance! with a pro jet pipe, and a bbk. we can control its revs a lot better now!
whatever happened to cutting the center bar for 20% more flow and using a single piece of polini green reed? this actually makes a very noticable difference to the point where you have to rejet.
atleast you're thinking davation but the stock reed spacer is a complete bottleneck due to the huge center bar thats right in the middle of the mixture path which causes turbulence. single polini green reed with no limiters is best for stock reed mod.
by the way i do run black widows in my ada reed cage and they help the bike start very easily and have mad take off power. and its true about 3 stages i let my friend ride my cag while i was on my banshee behind him and heard all three powerbands first being the loudest second actually jolted the bike forward letting out mad smoke and third isnt as impressive. i bet polini blue reeds in the ada cage with the center bars cut on the ada cage would be tops!
or wait i forgot about gianninis 8 pedal cage for cags simply the best.
