how to install reeds for new bikers.EASY

Hello. for those new bikers that just started and want to start modding their bike im going to tell you how to properly change your case reeds.

first im going to tell you where they are located. Case reeds are located before the carb. They have a metal plate that they are screwed onto.

first what you are going to do is take the air filter off. if you have a stock carb it should be 2 screws to take out usually phillips head. take those off. lay the air filter on a surface that the air filter will not get dirty.

carefully clean the carb intake so that you will not clog the carb with any dirt or sand particles.

take the right size hex key and unscrew those bolts. when the screws are finally out carfully take the carburator off and lay down on a surface with no dirt.

now you will see a black manifold (if stock carb) and you will see 4 screws. take the right size hex key and CAREFULLY unscrew those and make sure not to damage the gaskets!!

TAKE NOTE OF WHERE THE SCREWS ARE (top or bottom of crankcase for installation)now you should see a flat plate which looks like 2 screw ends coming out. if your case reed block does not fall off or come off. clean the area free of any dirt or grime even your hands! push the stock case reeds in gently enough to get a hold on the reed block and pull up gently, or what ever direction you have your bike on.

TAKE NOTE OF THE CUT CORNER ON THE REEDSyou have your reed block with stock reeds. make sure you get the right size phillips screw driver and start unscrewing the screws that hold the stock reeds and reed stops on. now take your new reeds and make sure your cut corner on the reeds goes onto the correct side.

carefully screw on DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN just tighten tight but not too tight, because you dont want to strip the screws.

__________________________________________________ _____________

installing new reeds

gently whipe away any dirt and greese from the gaskets and sand.

start to install the reed block as you should have taken note of which way your reed block came off.

carefully start to put the manifold on and dont shove the screws through the hole as you will probably rip the gasket.

tighten the manifold tight but dont over tighten.

install the carb and tighten the screws.

install the airfilter and start the engine up and when started let warm up and take for a ride but not long as we are checking if engine is running lean or rich.

run WOT, WOT means wide open throttle. for 15-20 seconds as this will not damage your engine.

take the spark plug out and check to see the color of the tip color

black=really rich
dark brown=rich
brown=good
light brown=good=perfect
tan=good=perfect
white= bad you are too lean

you want to stay within the brown to tan section or any thing that says good to perfect

any other questions just ask.

One thing you forgot to mention. When the reed is installed properly, the port holes will be closed by the reed in resting position.

Re: how to install reeds for new bikers.EASY

When you put the reed block and reed stop back together, the screws should be on the top. There's a flat piece on the reed stop that sets against the reed block, sandwiching your reeds in between.

Why isn't this thread a sticky?

Screws go on top.

Sounds like you may need some better reeds in your bike, Mark. Replacing the stock tin reeds with carbon fiber or fiberglass ones (I prefer the CF ones myself) may help out.

Re: how to install reeds for new bikers.EASY

Mark,
Carbon Fiber dude, I think $10 a Dave's, and cut the top off the reed blocks grind back .050 or .060 of an inch on the same arc to the bottom
off the reed stops, lets your reeds open 1/16th father, works good with
CFs.
SpyGuy, put a .70 jet in #3 eng. adj. the float arms down aliitle, got the CF reeds & ground reed stops. She runs good now, the twin boost tubes are probably too much, but I will split them when they go on the 2 Drag Engs & the extra manifold fitting w/ be hook to the NOS Trigger, Yea haw.
Hell, I might get to the C1 before April!! EPR!
