I ride a yamaha FZ6 normally... looking to get into pocket bike racing. Not sure which bike I should get. I have $200 to spend, and Im going to buy a used bike. any suggestions?

I found a 2008 Cag 49CC full faring model for $200. It has an exhaust, boost pipe, lights, single ring head, pegs, and K&N air filter... is that a good deal assuming the bike has never been wrecked and the motor is ok?

Also saw an X9 for about the same price that needs a pull start and the ignition switch is bad... makes me think its stolen.

which would be better for beginner track use? Or maybe a totally different bike?

any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: new guy

Welcome to the forums, ZigZagg.

The Cag sounds like it's your best bet, sounds like the previous owner did some modding on it. Cags can be modded endlessly, as you'll soon discover if you hang out here long enough. (Consider also that brand-new, these bikes are only like $250-ish, too.) The X-9 .... probably better to be safe than sorry, if it really is a stolen bike.

Cags are okay starter bikes, but bear in mind that they're mainly Chinese-made, and not great quality. The Lucky 7 Cag is the best of the Chinese-made Cag series, and has a removeable swingarm. Kinda hard to find, but best quality overall.

If you decide that you want a high-quality bike, then you can make the jump to a Euro (European-made) bike, like a Stamas, GRC, or Polini. All high-quality bikes, but also high-dollar, too.

Good thing is, you already have the safety equipment (gloves, helmet, jacket, etc.), so that won't be an extra expense on top of the bike itself.

Re: new guy

I started with a Cag too, along with a lot of people here.

They are the least expensive of most pocket bikes, and with some time/patience/money, you can turn it into a screamer.

Due to your small budget, you won't be able to swing around the European bikes yet, but it's the next upgrade after a Cag. I say ride the Cag and have fun, and once you're ready for more power and a better bike, then you'll have to look into the European bikes like Spy said. You can find used Euro bikes around $600-$800, and built ones for over $1000.

Naw, prob just needs a good carburetor cleaning .... As long as the engine started the one time, you're in good shape, means you can get it fired again with a littl time and patience. If it DIDN'T start, that's when we'd say you probably got hosed ....

Re: new guy

Fired it up today... 5th pull. It idles good when warm...not at all when cold... took it for a spin and I went about 35mph indicated by the schwinn speedo... I weigh 195lbs...I thought this little thing would be slower... its faster than the moped I used to have!!!

One issue... after I shut it off, it drips fuel like mad from the carb....seems to be leaking from the float bowl... all screws are tight...

any ideas?

Re: new guy

For the fuel, turn the white valve to the horizontal position, that will prevent fuel from spilling.

As far as the idle, you might have to adjust it. There's a nut on the side of the carb that will adjust the idle, play around with it until you get a good set of RPM's to idle like you want it to.

As far as driving it, I hope you didn't ride on the street...it's forbidden!!!! Just make sure you're always riding with safety gear on, especially a helmet, they are small bikes but you can really hurt yourself. Find a parking lot to ride the bike, make sure you're away from parks and kids. An industrial zone/warehouse is the best place to ride, especially on the weekends.

well, it leaks even after I turn both fuel valves off... the guy I got it from modded it with bigger fuel lines and an inline shut-off/filter. It stops leaking after about 3 minutes or so.

It idled nice and even after it warmed up a bit, so I think Im ok there.

and yeah, I zipped up and down my street... I live in a tiny town...on a dead end street. I didnt wear any gear either... after seeing how fast it actually goes, ill be wearing gear next time. I just doubted the hell out of this little bike. now I know.

He probably did the petcock mod, and maybe didn't do it 100% right, but once you close the valve, there's no reason why fuel should still keep leaking. Maybe there's something wrong with the carb.

And make sure you keep the street riding out of here, site staff has a firm and strict policy on street riding, not only because it's illegal but it's also dangerous. So make sure you always ride in a parking lot and with the necessary gear. :blink1:

Re: new guy

keep in mind this is a higher quality made bike but if you have intentions of racing it i would not use a L7 they have a shorter wheelbase than a standard cag and do not handle well especially with the swingarm lift kit .
A standard frame FF cag will be plenty sufficient and will handle much better

I searched for the petcock mod...the search function on this forum is terrible... anything I write in the search box results in ZERO hits..

yeah its got a seperate fuel shut-off...inline filter...

Other than that, Its got a K&N air filter, some kind of modded exhaust, a single ring head and hardly anything for foot pegs... are there supposed to be substantial foot pegs on these?

Re: new guy

Go into the Air-Cooled section, then look at the top of the page - there's a section that says "Air-Cooled Mods" at the top ... petcock mod is in there, along with a bunch of other stuff.

Anyway, more-or-less, the petcock mod is this: You take the petcock off the carburetor and take it apart - save the small O-ring on the bottom, you'll need it later. There's a small rubber piece that looks like a button - where that piece goes, fill the entire thing up with J-B Weld, and let it dry. Once it's dry, take your drill (1/8"), and drill straight down through the barb on top of the petcock all the way through the bottom hole. (Did you remember to take the small O-ring off so you didn't destroy it?) Basically, what you're doing is converting the petcock valve into a straight pipe. Some guys put a small metal plate over the J-B Weld before putting the petcock back on the bike.

Footpegs are usually small, but you can purchase larger ones. If you do, I suggest meathooks, which have a lip on the outer edge. They postion your feet quite nicely for turns.

Re: new guy

thanks for the info.

as far as foot pegs.. I dont think my bike has any at all... just solid metal jutting right off the frame...its part of the frame. check out the pic I posted earlier and you may be able to see what I mean.

Re: new guy

Yep, those are just the stubs .... every bike has 'em. Footpegs are fairly easy to find on the various vendor sites - I use Dave's Motors, myself.
