POssibly a fuel supplky issue

Hey guys, you've bene helpful in the past, and I come back here now and then to figure things out that I couldn't ...plus I have some things to mention that might help some ppl...

Lets start with the helpful things I learned...My bike has trouble starting so I checked the plug, turns out I have almost no spark, while putting the black rubber connector over the plug, over and over again, it pretty much broke, and the little spring in cap came off with the spark plug...I looked at the wire end, and saw I needed more wire, stripped some reattached the spring, presto...SO maybe some of you who have no start, that may be your problem, the wire may not be connected to the spring, thus no electricity flowing to the spark plug.

The problem. This bike has been carb cleaned, and I put on a different jet, not new, but one that worked on a different bike. I wanted to ask, how clearly should I be able to see through the main jet, it is a VERY small opening, I put carb cleaner through it, and blew through it (no compressed air), but the hole isvery tiny. Seeing as how some times my float sticks and I have over flow, I know my carb does the job. But I have a problem, I need partial throttle to start the bike, and the bike 90% of the time has to start with the choke on. When I switch it off, the bike either slows idle and dies, or it works, but lately the problem is that I dont think I am getting max rpm out of the bike, plus I have no go power, it barely wants to move? So it isn't my carby is it? Before dismantling the world, how should I test or check for leaks...? SO as a break down, not all of these problems happenat once, but I don't think I have fixed permanantly any fo them.

No start without partial throttle
Only starts with choke on
With choke off, is likely to stall out
When throttle given, either dies or does not give max output in rpm ( or so it seems) its really an audio cue I'm taking...
No go power...

By the way, A friend has a bike that needs just a bit of quickstart to fire everytime, but his won't idle at all either, but he can run it, and ride it as long as he does not release the throttle...and some how, he runs a 20:1 mixture, which works...I mean flawlessly...

Adjusst the idle screw. Tighten it all the way, and then take it out 2 1/4 turns, should solve your idling problem, and should start easier.

Re: POssibly a fuel supplky issue

When you say you took the main jet from another bike that worked on that bike, it does NOT mean that its the right jet for your current bike your working on. Depending on mods/tuning of the bike you will need more or less gas to be in the mixture. Its ok to start the bike with a little throttle, but from the sounds of it the only reason your bike will run with the choke on is because your limiting the air and that seems to be the right mixture with fuel, meaning with the choke off that you need more fuel! You will probably need a bigger jet, but to be sure you need to do a plug chop (check plug if your running lean, white/gray, or rich, black/dark brown), you're aiming for a golden brown, but just sticking any old jet in your carb is not a good means to successful tuning. I would suggest buying a jet pack of jets around .68-.74...you will most likely use a .68 or .7...my bike is pretty heavily modified and a .72 is almost to much for it.

Re: POssibly a fuel supplky issue

right...it makes sense, but let us remember this bike in particular is stock, should it still require a larger jet? And I'm probably going to go buy a jet kit anyways. On a working bike, with no mods, would the jet size change performance, and how will this affect the durability of the engine?
