Ok ok i don't get it.. ... are you measuring the distance from the piston at TDC to the top of the Head where the plug is..... ? put it in and push it over... and pull the cord
? push it over what way...how far down.. GAH *boggle*

Yare measuring the distance between the top of the piston and the dome. (The smallest distance is on the outside of the dome not the spark plug) Use some solder and bend it at an angle and put it is the sprak plug hole to that the solder is touching the side then pull the cord and pull the solder out and measure.
