2 shoes clutch vs 3 shoes clutch

Let's share some comment on them:

I have polini clutch with red springs on my polini 911 rep, I am happy with it. I personally think the 2 shoes have a smoother ride, when I rode on my buddy DM, he has a 3 shoes zocchi on the bike, the clutch hits really hard.

Re: 2 shoes clutch vs 3 shoes clutch

hey bro alot of it has to do with the spring rates and if the arms are weighted also . I have a BZM 2 shoe carbonium and a BZM 3 shoe strong and it was night and day difference when i put the weights in > I will never go back to weightless shoes but I like the harder hit onthe clutch it provides alot less slip and IMHO helps keep the clutch engaged better and a little longer when your off the throttle. I also prefer the strong shoes over the carboniums I think they bite a little better

Re: 2 shoes clutch vs 3 shoes clutch

so what are the pros and cons for the two? I am used to the 2 shoes, but recently I saw some top riders in my club started using the 3 shoes instead.

the 3 shoes have more surface area on the clutch bell which means more bite . its kind of a personal preference thing I think lighter riders are fine with 2 shoes but big brutes must have a 3 shoe

standard steel back plate . and strong shoes . i have ran a full yr on a set of those if you manage your clutch well and break it in properly they will last a long time and these bite best of all the shoes. get the weights just to try them out there like $3 i guarantee you wont go back . the carboniums are ok but a bit expensive and I dont think they bite as well and seem to slip a tad more out of the hole however they do last longer but seem to cause a little more wear on the bell than the strongs

I heard the 3 shoes clutch engagement rpm is higher than the 2 shoes. I am currently running a polini clutch with red springs. I don't think I can put weight on a polini clutch, since it doesn't have the holes on the shoes like the BZM ones do. If I go for the BZM 3 shoes as you suggested, am I be able to use the polini 80mm bell that I am using now?

as far as higher engagement its what ever you adjust it to so to say it has higher engagement is not true . just use your polini back plate and buy new BZM shoes for it and springs and the weights they will screw right into the BZM shoes and yes you will be able to use the stock clutch bell . I have tried the polini clutch and its nowhere near the bite of the BZM strong , personally I thought it slipped alot and didnt bite well . I dont know how much you weigh but anyone over 180 lbs and a open motor should consider a 3 shoe . this also applies to having a more powerful motor too . I run the 2 shoe in my GRC with a A/C 4.2 in it and use a BZM 2 shoe with carboniums and blue springs and it does fine even with my 200+ lb butt on it however if I put that clutch in my open motor it doesnt work well for me its setup with strong shoes and red springs . if you have a stock 911 rep a 2 shoe should be more than plenty of clutch just try the BZM pads and weights

You and I properly weight the same. I am 6ft, about 200lbs. I will order some BZM strong and weight and try it out with my polini clutch first. Everything internal on my polini engine is stock except I put some BZM crank and wrist pin bearing and black widow reeds.

Re: 2 shoes clutch vs 3 shoes clutch

just set it up so it engages at around 7000 to break it in and ride it like you normally would and get some heat in it for a half tank full then readjust it in the 8900-9500 rpm range and ride it like you normally would

Re: 2 shoes clutch vs 3 shoes clutch

hey guys so i've been reading some of these posts. I have the 2 spring one, Red springs Clutch. I didn't understand how the clutched worked, thankz to Google i got the answer.

But i'm worried about mine, like i don't know if it's just how the clutch is or i have a bad rim. It doesn't spin smoothly. When i jack up my bike and get it started. I have to throttle (to me) a lot compared to my other bike. That has 3 springs.

Something you should check before the clutch. check whether your chain is too tight, your axle bolt is too tight and any damage on the wheel bearings. Then to the clutch, you should set your engagement point to right before the engine hits the powerband. I am thinking your clutch may engage too soon, that's why it feels lack of power.

Tighten your springs: engage later.
Loosen your springs: engage sooner.

Better off having a measuring caliper to help you to make sure both side of the springs are equal in height to avoid uneven worn. A tach is a handy tool to have for clutch adjustment as well

here is an good read about clutch adjustment:

Re: 2 shoes clutch vs 3 shoes clutch

ok i didn't check the clutch yet but i've been riding both my bikes getting them broken in. My Black bike that has the 3 shoe clutch is way funnier to ride i can lightly turn the throttle and i'm off then even give it more to get maximum speed. My Red bike has the 2 shoe clutch with red springs and it takes more throttle for it to run and i can't even let go of the throttle to slow down and then speed up like i do on my black bike.

Would this be caused by the clutch or is my red bike just way to fast?

Re: 2 shoes clutch vs 3 shoes clutch

Whats up with that clutch Smokey? Are those cooling fins on the back?

And I've got to say, I don't think they could make those pads any larger, They have got to bite pretty hard as the clutch engages ..

Cool pic

Nick.
