For the benefit of those who purchase one of the next edition of the SHO which will be available in about a week we want to urge the following break-in procedure.
1. DO NOT start with a racing pre-mix. In the one instance where a cylinder has been burnt out, widely publicized on this forum, it was due to the immediate use of a 50:1 pre-mix called "Dr. Bill's Racing Cocktail". The bike was immediately driven to max. output with no consideration given to proper lubing of the engine components. Since this was an initial introduction a factory replacement cylinder was offered but declined.
2. We recommend as we did at the beginning, although some may disagree, that you use a mix of regular non-premium motor oil for the first tank of fuel. This will insure that the rings are well lubed and seated. Do not run the bike at maximum output until you have broken in the engine.
3. Do not do wheelies for show. If the bike was intended to run on one wheel it would have saved money by building it as a unicycle. In particular, while you are getting used to it, keep both wheels on the ground and do not let it get away from you, which it will try to do. Forcing it to do wheelies is the quickest guaranty that you will burn out the clutch, aside from any other factor involving the clutch design.
4. We have discovered that in most instances the problem with the leakage of liguid from the cap of the coolant overflow tank has been due to excess liquid in the system. The design has been changed, however if you experience a similar problem remove some of the liquid. Remember that it is an overflow tank, not just a reservoir, and if it is overfilled the liquid will try to get out somewhere. We have not had a single reported instance of an engine overheating.
5. For those who intend to race we will shortly release a performance exhaust system specifically designed for the SHO. This is strictly optional and will likely required re-jetting of the carburetor so it is something only intended for those with experience on how to go about it. Of course we will provide continuing advice in this regard.
The initial version of the SHO should not be regarded as a Polaroid of what the bike is now or will be in the future. Think of the continuing development of it as a video that will constantly be updated and improved. If you have questions we invite them or other comments with regard to performance by contacting us a
Service@Scootereq.com . As things begin to thaw out in most of country we are looking forward to an exciting upcoming season.
For those PB'ers in Texas and the nearby Gulf Coast there will be three events, the first hosted by the AMMRA in Texas, at the Thunderhill Raceway outside of Austin in June, July and August. We will keep you posted for further details.
