Badazztoys C1 17mm carb review

Badazztoys 17mm carb review
As many of you have seen on PBP, sonic is now selling 17mm carbs for the
C1. I had been planning on buying a dell'orto carb but the price was
holding me back, so when I saw Sonic's carb for $65.00 I had to ask was it a
good carb. Sonic assured me that the carb "made a substantial increase in
power" so I ordered one up. My package arrived today with the 17mm
carb($65.00) that had 4 main jets. I quickly went to installing and found that I had to robb a couple parts off the old carb to make it work but that it fit in quite nicely, I reconnected everything and found that my old cable was too long so I had to put in a 1 inch spacer down by the top of the carb to take up the extra slack, this worked great. I was also a little peeved that there was no air cleaner and that the old one would not fit but I was determined to test it one way or another .

Once I had the carb in and adjusted correctly I gave it a couple pulls and the engine fired up quickly and would rev super quick, once on the throttle the clutch seemed to engage
at a lower rpm, maybe by as much as 1000rpm and it did not bog or hesitate
in any manner. Turning to mid throttle the bike pulled very hard through
the mid range and up it's top speed which was easily 5-8mph faster then on
the old carb, I also think the new carb is pulling a significantly higher
top rpm, there is no hesitation anywhere in the power range and the carb
does not fall off until you get up to a very high speed . I was running the
biggest jet that came in the kit but I am certain that I could be running an
even larger one for more power gains.
Once back at the garage it would no longer idle, I looked down to see that my idle set screw had fallen out. I found it laying in the road and replaced it but noticed there was no spring inside to keep tension on it, so once you have the idle set you need to put a little lock tite or something to help keep it in the carb.

The bottom line is that the carb is the most effective power upgrade I
have purchased for my bike and would recommend it to everyone, I was truely amazed that a carb could make that large of a power increase and also seem to really change the engagement of the clutch making the whole motor perform more like the italian bikes. You will absolutely love the amount of low and mid range power that seems to come with this carb, definetely something that was lacking on the stock carb. Anyway with the amount of money you will save on this carb spring for the air cleaner upgrade which I am sure Sonic will have available after this review.

Rock on and enjoy those C1's, with the right mods these are really great pocket bikes!!!

thanks...ill send you a free stroker crank when i get them to test out. I am working on a filter for the carb but i use a linen cloth. Also there is no choke on this carburetor but put your hand slightly on the linen cloth and it has an instant choke. If you bought the carb from me and want a filter when i get a batch in i will give them to you if you bought the carb prior to today.

Wink

As i tried to tell every one in the tunning trhead....

The bigger carb seem's to be the cheapest/ best way to solve sum of the initial problems the stock cag's have, mainly the clutch problem....
I've run my bike for more than 10 tank's of fuel now, and still my stock clutch is holding up fine, not even turned blue ore slipping, can't even see the wear on it...and i'm 170pound(85kg)..... the rest of my bike is all stock....
keep on tuning

BungeeGuy--what did you use in the carb outlet to fix it to the mainifold? My stock bushing is nowhere near close to fitting the 17mm carb. It's good to hear the results are worth the effort to install the carb.
Here's some pics of the stock bushing in the carb. I need to make a custom bushing and sealing washer. I found three different filters that will bolt right on to the carb. I'm going to use a Suzuki cable and knob setup for the choke. Did you find out the sizes of the included jets?

This should be a good mod once badazz gets the kit together.

Hi Arjan,

What you have said makes sense to me. I don't know why I didn't think about it before. More HP=less slipage. From what you say, it seems as if the stock clutch isn't the issue. I will investigate this further.

I am just about to get a Genuine Dell'orto carb. Which one should I go for? 17.5mm or 19mm?????

Some say that the 19mm is harder to tune for non-racers, and some say that the 17.5mm is far simpler to tune. I am somewhat experienced with tuning 2 strokes, but by no means an expert.

What do the rest of you guys say???

I'd say go with the 19, ony because i haven't heard from anyone else using it.............. thats not really a good reason but if u do get the 19 keep us posted

hey bonzai im sorry you are having difficulties with your kit. I tried to get kit out as fast as possible cause i had alot of people wanting the carb cause it was the main bottleneck on the bike. Im wondering if somehow your manifold is diff than the other bikes? I will have a kit together for the carb with an air filter soon and ill hook you guys up. we tried a 20mm as well and we couldnt get it to idle and for an above avergage weight rider the bike sucked except on long straight aways, and im assuming cause with the bigger carb you kill the air velocity.

In the 17mm carb sonic sent me there was a brown collar, I pulled the white collar off my stock carb and inserted it into the brown one so I was now using a double collar. It worked great no leaks!! I also had to steal the little black nipple that was on the fuel inlet port and put it on the new carb to keep fuel from leaking.
The 1 inch spacer I used was an old clutch cable adjuster off my dirt bike, it worked perfectly to take up the slack but I think you could just cut the cable down if you have a way to reattach the end.
For the jets I just eyeballed them and used the largest and for the filter I made my own until Sonic gets a nice one in.
This carb kit just came out and will improve but I say for the price and the little bit of modification it needs, man it is a steal!!!

No I have my squish set at .50mm and a zocchi 3 shoe clutch. I have tested the stock clutch with the 79mm zocchi drum and it works great, read my thread on "cheap/good clutch fix" Oh and the carb makes the clutch work even better!

I got thinking...banzai your bike may not be from shegqi so it may be diff than most of the other hydras but the cable should fit perfect into carb. As far as choke, if its cold, lift the back of the bike up for three seconds to allow fuel to overflow into cylinder then put back down and it will fire right up.
on the collar just use a belt sander to sand it down or you can use some teflon tape on the manifold.
This carb is not designed to run a filter and in fact you see mose of the roadrace cars, karts, gp bikes run no filters, open velocity stacks, but I still see wanting to be careful so use a linen cloth with a hose clamp or even go to an autozone and see if you can find a crankcase breather that will work

UPDATE: I had a points race tonite at an indoor track that is pretty tight and won 1st place in both heats and the main. My clutch was engaging at an excellent mid range in the power band and would pull out of the corners like never before. Believe me this carb absolutely rocks and does wonders for the clutch!!!

I want one...Does it come with mains, or at least fit comon main jet sizes? Adjustable needle? Pretty much a bolt on other than needing the white collar out of stock carb?

do you guy's bolt this directly on the stock mani?, you need a bigger manifold if you want all the power it provides, i used a blata 17,5 mani and del'lorto 17,5.

If youre mani is 14mmm the carb will work like a 14mm....nomatter if you put an 17,5 or 19 if you don't change the mani, the power upgrade isn't half as good!!!!
If you plan to use the stock mani remove the aluminium pipe out of the mani and buy a del'lorto it fit's right in, also you want to dremel the mani so it's 17,5/19 all the way trough... THE CARB IS AS BIG AS THE SMALLEST INLET

Look for a full step by step install of the carb tonight including how to make your own choke lever with parts from your local hardware/hobby shop. Here's some teaser pics.

Good point Arjan. Doesn't it defeat the purpose of that bigger carb if your still using the same size mani?

I am not sure if they are the same. The jets I got came with the carb but I am going to a dellorto dealer to see if their jets will work. I will post my results.
