Z1 Mech. HELP Needed !

Hi Guys

Knowing MANY Z1 owners on this forum, MAY be able to help me, with an answer to two questions...

'I'm a carpenter and mason by trade, not a mechanic..'

-My foot peg (right side.. coil side) BROKE at the BOTTOM mount(not top) , & not at the 'adapter to peg' it's fine, but the very END of the main body/engine screw (I believe this is also, the same LONG 1 pc screw that is ALSO the LOWER engine mount/swingarm lower bolt, that passes thu to other side and other peg...

its holding the frame fine, but now does not protude enough past swingarm now, for the peg adapter to thread on, broke right off!
also worried that now broken, the rear swingarm may loosen? doubt it tho,,,just need to refix this peg

1-WHAT IS THE SIZE OF THIS LONG bolt to replace her? AND is it ONE continuous bolt across?(looks like) or: TWO, one in from 'each side', again got the adapter still, just theres no 'thread left', to go back on, this must be replaced, what size is it? wonder where the hell to get it too, in black no less with a hex inlet head on one end for the opposite peg? yikes? what a design, lol

and 2-after this situation is FIXED, what other pegs are people using, as I like mine, just wondering what other options are out there, for the Z1?

thanks in advance so much for any help

cheers!

you can use meathooks, or any kind of peg that uses the bracket.

go talk to allan, i know he can supply you with some meathooks, or the stubby footpegs you see stock on the banshee.

Re: Z1 Mech. HELP Needed !

Yes that bolt goes right across tomino and it is a 10 x 170mm hex head shoulder bolt. You can replace it with a 10mm longer 10 x 180 mm shoulder bolt as I did so as to get a few extra threads exposed for securing the lower right foot peg mount but there is a catch ! If you look at the hex head end of the original 10 x 170mm bolt you will see it's threaded to accept the 6mm bolt that holds the lower left side foot peg mount and also notice that the hex head has to recess in the swingarm on the right side. If you go get the longer 10 x 180mm bolt like I did your going to have to have the hex head turned down a little so it can recess in the swingarm and as well the hex head end will need to be drilled and tapped to accept the 6mm bolt that holds the footpeg mount.

The pictures show the original as I was disassembling my bike...first thing I spotted was that the bolt was too short to provide any meaningful support for the footpeg mount...I mean 2 threads holding that thing on ?? What were they thinking !

Re: Z1 Mech. HELP Needed !

Yea the bike was upside down when I snapped those pics, I was checking the center line alignment of the bike amongst other things at that point in time. You should be able to get a 10 x 180 hex head shoulder bolt at any industrial fastener supplier...here in London I go to FACCA Fastner but in Toronto I don't know where you'd go. Canadian Tire or any of the big box hardware stores would not likely have one of these as it's not something the average joe blow would need everyday. Also do you have access to a machine shop ? Your going to need to have the new bolt customized for your purpose.

BTW yes this is SteveG from Gearheads and some of the London guys are maybe coming up to run at 3S on the 7th I won't be bringing my Z1 though if I make it down...it's still in pieces...my air cooled B1 rep always runs like a champ so I'll just re-gear it to run there if I'm able to come that day.

Re: Z1 Mech. HELP Needed !

Steve!

GREAT News this a.m....

I'm having my coffee, staring at the bikem then I realize, how the #$%^ did this bolt break?

then it hit me, 'has this thing just loosened? no,,,such a long bolt,,,

well sure enough, its 'out' the other side, and yes, I get about 6 threads again, now shes tight again

presto, back on the mount goes, she never broke, was just loosened!

*I do however, plan to go the 180 and tap route STILL tho bro, for better hold, especially if I go to a 3rd party peg........

so, thnx again, I appreciate the help, and info, for the sizing and stuff, also glad to hear ya got a z1, maybe pm me, yer changes and hops, and we can xchange info, and PLZ try to come on 7th!

cheers mate

thnx again !
