Lightbulb How To : Make your pocket bike quiet

1. go to your harware store and get some steel wool
2.take off your muffler tip and take the stock stuffing out
3. fill the new space with the steel wool (pack it in there)

Re: How To : Make your pocket bike quiet

What kind of performance have you seen with this kind of exhaust packing? Any decrease?

Re: How To : Make your pocket bike quiet

No noticeable decrease in performance. I've done the same mod on my own bikes, and it seems to work just as well as the standard fiberglass muffler packing (and is cheaper to get your hands on).

Re: How To : Make your pocket bike quiet

It reminds me of the steel wool flash bombs we used to make in shop class...a lil oil,,a bit of gas and a spark from the grinder is all it took to set it off with a nice flash and a mushroom cloud backup.....lol

*laffs* Figures you would post something like that!

Then again, I'm no better - not only did I grow up being a gearhead, I used to run with some of the renegade chemists back in college, and picked up a whole score of neat and/or nasty tricks ....

Re: How To : Make your pocket bike quiet

How tight do you pack it in there?

I did the spray can mod and used #3 steel wool, but only noticed a very slight 1dB decrease in SPL and yes, I did actually use a dB meter (actually a RTA)...LOL

I packed it in pretty good, but figured that, if packed too tight, it would negate the effect of the larger can. I could pack it in tighter if necessary.

How much quieter were you able to get it using steel wool on the stock pipe and how tight did you stuff it in there? How many pads of steel wool did you use?

Re: How To : Make your pocket bike quiet

You don't need to pack it in too tight. I only used something like 3 sheets of #3 coarse steel wool. It lowered the annoying high-pitched whine down to a lower-pitched rumble, which was perfect for that bike. People really look at it when I start it up. (Then again, maybe it's not just because of the spraycan exhaust .... the whole bike is really something to look at.)

What packing, most of my pipes had Nothing. I am going to start a You Tube account my son has one. You should hear my A2 Avatar bike, w/ my $535 B/B FC crank racing engine, and the straight pipe with no exspansion chamber and a big baffle muffler that I modded, its Loud & Nasty. The best part is there is nothing to take apart and it is chrome plated so no Paint.

EPR, what else comes with that fatty pipe you have to mount it? Does it only mount on a heavily modded engine or can if be placed on a semi-stock/stock motor with what looks to be a header that's not pictured?

Re: How To : Make your pocket bike quiet

Thats, the Pro Jet SS Rep pipe I took off the A2 and put the HP Big Muffler Pipe on, and The U pipe is not in the photo. I was using it to compare the pipes. The pipe was on ebay, for $8.99 and $14.95 S/H, or $23.95 to your Door, and its chrome, how can you go wrong?? I got a twin muffler pipe for the same price.
The Jet or the Big M mount to any Cag engine. On the Jet it has a head pipe then everything else is held by springs.
On the Big M, it is supposed to mount under the seat on the cross brace of a F1 or F2, so I had to bend the rear mount piece into a U shape, and mount it where the stock on goes. On the dual M it nounts the same way on the bar running acrossed the back, so I will have to make a bracket to mount the rear.

On my bike I used a piece of threaded rod. Use some double nutting and it worked out great.

I have a big vise and hammer, for exhaust work, every different exhaust I have bought, had to Mod it somehow to make it work.

Re: How To : Make your pocket bike quiet

Well, duh ...

Not to worry ... my Re-Cycle bike is running a Tecumsah mufler on a 2" header pipe .... and man, it sounds vicious when I fire it up. I was originally running a goped muffler on it, but apparently when I welded it up the first time, the muffler was hanging just a little too low .... About a week or so later, a solid hit on a big rock took care of that problem - oops! After that, I went to the Tecumsah.

Re: How To : Make your pocket bike quiet

Would there be a difference in results between a 2 stroke and 4 stroke if the above silencing trick was applied?

Re: How To : Make your pocket bike quiet

You need good back pressure on a 2 stroke, on a 4 stroke like my Kawasaki 1000 drag bike we had 3ft of pipe off the engine, slashed on the ends, no muffler at all.
