Project "3-3-3" Triple Reverse Trike Build-ups Build #1

This thing started its life as a Bashan 200cc shaft driven quad that I got for free from the trash..

Short story was old owner got tired of putting time and $ into a Chinese made quad and decided to buy a Japanese brand..

After getting it home I was looking it over and found out the killswitch on the handlebars was activated and it fired right up....The old owner came out as I was loading it up said it only had a keyswitch.....LOL

I modified it shortly after and all the power added couldnt be handled by the rearend housing and it quickly grenaded into pieces....LOL

Replacement rears were in excess of $400.00 and also discontinued....days of searching I was left with no option but to strip the engine off and put it on a project as i couldnt justify paying $400.00 for something that may grenade again......LOL

Looking at the thing and thinking I thought what is something I havent built and havent seen built on PBP that I can do to this thing as a whole...?.

A Reverse Trike....!!!

But not just one....Im planning on building 3 reverse trikes and not all the same...

Yep 3 totally different reverse trike builds and I plan on doing 3 seperate threads too....LOL

This first reverse trike build I decided to make it streetlegal.......

Let the journey of the first transformation from 4 wheel quad to Reverse Trike begin............

Re: Project "3-3-3" Triple Reverse Trike Build-ups Build #1

After stripping out the puzzle pieced rearend I also removed the shaft drive box and shaft from the 200cc engine...

Then I did some measurements and made a plan.....

First I tried fitting a swingarm from a 1993 Kawasaki Ninja parts bike....no dice....

After measuring the rear swingarm from my 89 CBR600 to see if it was a possibility and suprisinigly it was so I bought a rear swingarm from a CBRF3 for $30 bux off ebay complete with rear axle...

Of course it needed to be modified to fit and it took some time to do the mock-up plus make the plan of attack on how it was going to line up between the engine shaft and the rear sprocket but eventually a lightbulb went off and a solid idea was formulated.....

While I was fitting the F3 rear swingarm to the quad frame I decided to attach an unpainted tailpiece from a 2004 CBR600RR that was a mock-up extra from my 89 Honda CBR600 F4i USD fork retrofit modification project I completed about 6 months ago......

I even took the time to mock in the Ninja250 rear wheel aswell as rear disc brake.....Being streetlegal requires it aswell as good overall stopping ability.

Plans are to use the rearsets too aswell as an Akrapovik exhaust I have from my GSXR1000..........

At this point everything appears to be lining up but theres things that are in the way from acheiving a perfect fitment aswell as a good look...

Re: Project "3-3-3" Triple Reverse Trike Build-ups Build #1

After taking another hard look at the streetlegal reverse trike prospect I felt it wouldnt live up to its potential by being deficient in the frontend suspension aswell as the crappy drum brakes....

The frontend looked too narrow plus had no adjustability and just plain didnt look right....

It needed a frontend with adjustability and that meant grafting in a frontend with an upper aswell as a lower a-arm...

Something needed to be done or change the plans of making this thing streetlegal and the second option wasnt even an option in my book....LOL....

Years ago I was pretty heavy into buying and modifying Quadracer250 aswell as Quadzilla500's...

I came to find out the predecessor of the Quadracer 250 became a utility version badged the quadrunner 250 which shared similarities to the QR250 but not dead on exactness........

This got me thinking...Seings the QR250 is a race quad and the Qrunner250 is a utility quad I felt that having the strength of the Quadrunner A-arms with eurethane bushings would be a better alternative to feeling the frontend shock the roller needle bearings in the quadracer front a-arms each time I slam a crack in the road...

Seeings the quadrunner front knuckles had frontwheel drive they couldnt be used...

Instead I opted to use the useable parts of the Quadracer250 that would prove the most beneficial which were......

The front spindles , lower balljoints,,hubs and disc brakes easily swap over even though the upper and lower a-arm configurations are totally different with a-arm with shock mount on the upper a-arm on the quadrunner its gonna become the lower a-arm with shock mount on the reverse trike project like the way its placed on the quadracer...

So I searched and searched and searched my many places where I have parts and finally was able to find enough useable pieces to keep the purchases needed to make at a minimum...

I found the Quadrunner 250 a-arms for $35.00 on ebay free shipping so I bought them......

Then I needed things like wheel hub bearings with seals and brake discs so I bought them aswell for another $35.00..

Killer, looks like its going to take some hard work to make all the parts come together, but I know you will figure it all out in the end.

Thanks EPR...I guess you got in before I could make the next post LOL

This project is kinda a lil further and not as hard as you might think....The planning stages and waiting out the hot brutal summer were time consumers in itself but were substituted with other fun worthwhile projects....LOL

Also remember that theres two other quad projects that are running along side this one.......

The threads for those will be made with-in the next day or two.....

Same title on the other two aswell except it will say build #2 and Build #3............

Re: Project "3-3-3" Triple Reverse Trike Build-ups Build #1

So before the hot brutal summer arrived I popped the thing up on a build bench and began to mockup the frontend placement after removing the cheesy a-arms........

The fit appears to be good.....

Had I not used my 1.5" x 2" square tube on my towtruck it most likely wouldve been mocked-up on that day....LOL

Re: Project "3-3-3" Triple Reverse Trike Build-ups Build #1

Summers over by a month and heats gone but running my businesses and doing other ventures consumes my time this time of the year aswell....

Anyways I got the squaretube from the steelmill this morning

A shot day of ultra heavy rain killed my days plans but afforded me the opportunity to get over to the metal box and begin to finish these things....

Winters coming quickly....LOL.......

Heres where Im at with the frontend mockup aswell as the rearend....

Steering column is removed aswell as rear tail support bars that were in the way plus I reshaped the rear tailpiece already using my acetylene torch.

Plans are to cut the rear tailpiece off and make it a removeable bolt-on unit...

It wont be long before I pop off the engine and weld up all the things that need to be welded so I can paint and final assemble the thing.....

Like the wide front suspension should make it pretty stable.

Re: Project "3-3-3" Triple Reverse Trike Build-ups Build #1

Today I was toying with the notion of putting the 2004 CBR600RR tail on project #2 and go with the seat and tail section from the 1989 Honda CBR600 F4i..

Seeings I was going to raise the seat section it will fit like a glove and offer better seating for a passenger......LOL

Also pictured below is the Speedometer Im planning to use on this Street legal Build-up plus pictures of the LED signals aswell as license plate LED lights that light the license plate up....

Its got a digital speed reading,,digital odometer aswell as digital gas gauge to go with the rest of the peripherals like directionals, neutral indicator, charging system fault indicator, highbeams and running lamp instrumentation indicators.....

It also can tell you what gear youre currently cruising in.................
