New Workstation...

Well, I just went through the most painful warranty experience of my life, 1 month and just under 2 weeks, I could have easily repaired the machine myself, but after just spending money on the extended warranty I figured I should give them a chance to fix it, well, I waited week after week waiting for a replacement motherboard, well it never came in stock, their tech support is VERY tricky, and in a roundabout way they secretly ask (without asking) if it's ok to take longer to fix it, i got tricked 4 or 5 times, for around 3 weeks, at the 1 month mark I hit a wall, got through to the escalations team, (yeah right) they wanted to make me wait more, I took a leap of faith and told them to send back my computer broken and I would fix it myself, this was by far my BEST move, My school starts Monday, As I am on the phone with the escalations team being told it's going to be at least 7-10 more days to put together a machine for me, well in the middle of his speech the UPS truck shows up, I told him and he did not even know what to say, so whatever, I open the box, and my computer was now a much better machine, I7-920 quad core with hyperthreading so it's basically like 8 cores, 9GB of triple channel DDR3, and a nice Radeon 4850 (9800gt equiv)

So I was lucky in the end, only loosing time, and now have a smoking fast machine that is better than what I paid for, and this is the only saving grace for HP.

I hate to do it, because I have been loyal to HP for YEARS, but I highly recommend everyone avoid HP like the plague, I have had much better luck with DELL.

So, What type of machine are you using? what kind of service / success have you had, I would like to hear some good stories, they can't all be bad...

Nick.

Re: New Workstation...

Still using this machine!

Upgraded the Hard drive to a Solid State Drive (SSD)
Upgraded the Video Card to a Nvidia GTX-660
Added some nice peripherals like a cordless keyboard and mouse and a 27" 1080P ASUS monitor.

And it still kicks butt on even brand new games, Like the new open access BETA of StarWars Battlefront.

You can see the gameplay in 720P if you watch it on youtube by clicking on the little youtube button on the player!

If you are able to see this message it means that you don't have flash installed or that the video server is down.

Re: New Workstation...

Nice. Always wanted to get into computers. Was going to put one together with my brother(computer wizard) but I never had enough to buy the remaining parts. It was going to have 16gb of RAM,2GB graphics card. All it neede was a motherboard, case, some cooling and I think he had a spare hard drive and then I was set. Unfortunately my dream never came true. But I just game on my ps3. Cod, gta, uncharted, bio shock and tombraider.

In 1999/2000 (I was 19 years old) I went out and received my Comptia A+ and my Comptia N+ as well as 5x Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) which turned into a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) then took a few more tests to receive my Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA)

I am still and will hopefully always be very proficient with PC / MAC hardware and software, 2D and 3D artwork, and all things web such as HTML JAVA flash/actionscript etc.

I know a few things, been on the internet since 1993 when I had to dial into a UNIX machine and run shell commands like pine to check email and browse the internet!

Its sad but still to this day when somebody asks me if I am really good at automotive / diesel I say no, simply because I compare what I know about engines to what I know about computers!
