Trouble running

Hi I have a cag pocket bike that was running fine last year. When I stored it I drained all the gas. I cleaned out the carb, installed a inline fuel shutoff, rocket key and did the reedstopper mod over the winter. I have the 14/14 rep carb on it and when I went to try to start it today it wouldn’t start unless it was on choke. It’s weird because before the bike would never even start with the choke on, but the bike won’t ride. Any ideas what it could be.

Sounds to me like you have created an airleak or the mods and current temps are throwing off the jetting...

As air gets cooler it gets denser requiring more fuel to run at say 45-50 degrees than it does at 65-70 degrees..

When you installed the carb did you install an o-ring between the carb and intake manifold?

If you can see those two different shaped holes in the emulsifier tube they need to be clean and clear...…...

A bike that's normal and jetted right will almost always need the choke except for when its warmed up...

If you can start a 2 stroker up without a choke from dead cold is usually an indication of a carb that's jetted too much or a float that's set very rich...

Its also possible you warped the petals on the reeds too when you did the reed stopper mod if you have fiberglass, triple stage or composite reeds causing them not to seal right as its very easy to overtighten the screws on any reed that's not tin....On any reed that's not tin yu must snug the screws and use Loctite to keep the screws from backing out...I use tiny nuts

Good Luck

I think its the ignition timing with the rocket key is wrong, make a spark but not at the correct timing. I see cage engine that won't ran with a other flyweel becaus of the chinese tolerances

Get your kick with 2 stroke mix

How do you adjust one of these carbs. I think I’m running too rich because when I took off the air filter there was a bunch of gas the leaked out. Yesterday when I started it on choke and took the choke off, it would just rev out then turn off. Last year when I changed the spark plug I noticed it was a little white so i thought it must be running lean. I don’t know if it’s too rich or running lean.

On my Alky/Methanol and nitrous engines I retard the rocket key.....I have zero problems keeping anything I own running....You must've had a seriously messed up engine or flywheel..

I guess you missed the part where the op said the bike was runnig good before the winter.........Winter is the key word as temps affect jetting.......

Most of the US is still in a cold snap and these bikes are miles away from being self-adjusting fuel injected engines......

That tells me the weather or an airleak is the culprit in this case..

Adjust them?

Idle screw

Float height setting

different shaped carb sliders

different size mainjets

Im gonna take it as a "NO" on the o-ring...Without one causes airleaks also the carb mount to crack.Go over to the DelOrtto carb page and read for yourself on how important that o-ring is....

Sounds to me like your float could set too high allowing more gas than needed to be sucked-up into the venturi..

Those rep carbs come stock with a 68 mainjet…A cag carb does too..

On this cag where the only mods were a rocket key and cylinder base gasket removal , stinger removal and a HP airfilter it required a 72 mainjet with the DelRep SHA 14/14 carb...

Before I installed the 2pc headkit I installed the del rep carb and composite reeds first.....

I hate to say it but my stock carb modded from 13mm' to 15mm's and 75 mainjet ran wayyy better than the Del rep did and my 15mm pumper carb ran way better than both.LOL

A tool based engine has way lesser velocity than a Euro built engine therefore what works great on European engines doesn't on Tool engines...get the compression of the cag whichis like 8:1 nearer to what the compression of a Euro engine is[16.5-17:1] and it may perform as it should....LOL.......LOL
