How To: Remove electric starter from Piston Ported 2 Stroke Engine.

This has been covered before by me but with photobucket holding what I post for ransom I decided it was easier to just make new threads using PBP's photo area......

Ok so you know right off the bat that the starter is indeed pressed onto the shaft and must be pressed off,,,not pryed off..Prying will bend or damage the crank.

You will need an M8 1.5 by 2 1/2" long metric bolt to get it off...The hex end will need a 14mm socket or boxend wrench...

Youll also need a way to stop the piston...I remove the sprkplug and lower the piston to BDC then I put rope into the sparkplug hole then roll the engine towards TDC til the piston stops......

Now you can remove the pawl bolt aswell as put pressure on the bolt used to pop the starter armature off the crank......

Remove the pawl bolt....

Thread the M8 1.5 x 2.5" long bolt into the armature center til it bottoms out to the crank....Once it bottoms out just give it a good turn or two to pop the armature free.........

Now you have two options...

1]
Gut the e-starter of the armature windings and the magnets and just use the armature center shaft aswell as magnet housing to keep the proper orientation of the pullstarter.....

The way you gut the windings from the armature is to put the armature in a vice then using a socket extension and a hammer drive the armature center through the armture...Heat from a plumbers torch makes it quicker aswell as easier........

2]
Eliminate the e-starter altogether....Thi s may require modification to the starter pawl aswell as definately needing a stud to spin the pawl onto....

I hope reviving and updating an old thread with viewable pictures helps members out.....

Thanks! I happen to have found a cat eye bike with a cvt transmission and wanted to use the engine for brushcutting but ingot stuck on the electric starter part lol..

Annyway this thread deserves to become a (how to) sticky if you ask me.

Very nice and clear diy write up with good pics

You can get it to work either way the only thing is the orientation of the pullstarter will change if you decide to totally delete the e-starter altogether so if you have a bodykit on it-it will matter............

You will need to devise a way to make a crankshaft stud and the best way would be to get the rectangular pawl and pullstarter for that...

If you have a tap and die set you can cut the 2 1/2" long stud down and rethread it to be able to secure the round GSmoon type pawl to the crankshaft end.........

Its faster and easier to just gut the whole thing and put it back together using the armature shaft, starter body, pullstarter shim, pullstarter pawl, pawl bolt and pullstarter and tossing the armature with windings, commutator, magnets and brushes in the trashbin..........

Optimal fuel would be to use ethanol free 91 octane fuel mixed to 40:1....If youre gonna use pumpgas get a 2 stroke oil with an ethanol stabilizer and use Premium fuel...

Good Luck

Great post CAM2. I'm fitting a new engine (same as the one in your pics). The old has an electric start but new only a pull. Can I remove electric starter from old engine and put in new using the old bolts etc?

Thanks and yes you absolutely can turn the pullstart only engine into e-start/pullstart using the old parts from the old engine just like you can turn an e-start engine into pullstarter only aswell..

When you use the pawl bolt to press the armature to the crankshaft make sure to tighten the bolt slowly and evenly as the pawl bolt is made of potmetal and very fragile and will snap if too much pressure is exerted all at once...

Good Luck

Unfortunately whoever owned the bike before me remove the pull start mechanism and the pawl bolt. I can't find a pawl bolt of the right type anywhere so I can't see how I can fit the starter to the new engine. Looks like it's going to be pull start only.

Thanks for help CAM2.

You can get the GSMoon 2 1/2" long pawl bolt from somewhere on the.web..As far as I know theres one left on ebay.

If not you can find a double ended metric stud thats M6 X1 and atleast 63.5mm's long.

Thanks again CAM2, can't find one on eBay but maybe because I'm in the UK. scooterdomain.com and pocketbikeparts.com list them but are 'out of stock'. Have found something similar on justscooterparts.com (see pic below). They do a 63mm and a 60mm so I thought I'd get both and hope one fits. Not sure they would mail to UK though, waiting to hear back from them.

Have you tried ordering directly from China or ebay UK?

Re: How To: Remove electric starter from Piston Ported 2 Stroke Engine.

There is Petrol Scooters .com in England, not sure if they have what you want, contact them and ask if they know anyone that might have your parts. It would cost $15 to $20 USD shipping to send 2 of them, CAM2 knows the shaft you need. On eBay try X7 two stroke pocket bike parts. Try ebay.com.uk for parts also. Most of us remove the electric start and make it a pull start engine. The generator just adds weight and robs power from you engine. If you want lights buy LED motorcycle lights, and run them of a battery then recharge it, they don't cost that much. www. aliexpress .com in China has tons of lights and parts, and they ship anywhere on the planet, well almost, lol.

How is a new starter motor pressed back on? Or can the original be reworked or cleaned?

The center pawl screw presses it back onto the shaft...........
