I just aquired an APC Mini Chopper bike in used condition, that hasn't been started or rode for about 2 years. I know that Pep Boys used to sell these for about $400-$500 a few years ago and I noticed the bike company is not around anymore. I'm just tinkering around with it and was wondering about a few things. I would like to find out more about the hobby and possibly enjoying this chopper with my kids.

What is the cc size of the engine, 43 or 49?

I do not have the key and I was wondering, is there a way to reroute the wires, so that I can turn it on without a key and what wires go to what (2 yellow, 1 green, 1 black)? All of the wiring is fully intact, I'm trying to hopefully bypass the key switch.

Will the bike start up with the pull start, without having the key or do I have to disconnect that wire, that is connected to the engine?

Last question, for now, does the choke have to be all the way up or all the way down, before I start it?

Before these pics were taken, I've cleaned it up alot, wiped it down, got rid of most of the rust, filled the tires, greased the chain, changed the spark plug and air filter. Before I go ahead and start it, I'd like to make sure I touched all the basics of what I need to do. Hopefully some users can help me out with any ideas or helpful hints.

Thanks in advance and I will now continue browsing the forums and getting more ideas. I didn't know that this was such a big hobby and it's great to see what people have done to their rides.
Thank you.

lol.you just got that from c/l for 60 bucks,,,,,,,,did you get the scooter too..........if you didnt grab it today he was giving it to me for 50 with the scooter and some other parts............

welcome to the forum..............that chopper is 43cc and its probably gonna need a good carb cleaning, tank wash-out and new in-tank fuelfilter installed along with a fresh sparkplug NGK BM6A to get it running..............i live on Li too and have wiring harnesses for them bikes aswell as ignitions with keys......

to start it you have to pump the primer bulb 5 times.....flick the choke to the on position ;-turn on key or pull ignition harness wires apart at the plugs and pull it.you dont need to hook anything together to get it running with the pullstarter.............Good luck with it....................Peace

It could be either a 43cc or 49cc. A easy way I have found to measure the bore to see which it is. Is to take a a wire tie and cut the end off that has that small bend on it. and measure 40mm and 44mm and make them on the tie. than slip it through the exhaust port and in the center of it and see which mark it measures at. It's crude but it works.

Well you can wire in a toggle switch. I'm really no good with the electrical crap so helping with wireing a toggle or bypassing the key switch as far as which wire you would connect together I don't know. But if you just want to use the pull start without the key and maybe fix the key or add a toggle later. You could follow the small wires from the coil to it's connector and mark them so you know where they plug together later. than unplug it. Than follow the wire from the starter button mark it and unplug it than plug it to the connector from the coil. Now this will make you starter button your killswitch.

You want to put the choke up to start and down to ride after it warms up alittle.

I would clean out the tank and put a freash mix at 40:1 before even trying to start it.

I appreciate the info and followed your advice, it's a 43cc engine. The killswitch idea sounds good.
Thank you.

I did some of those things that you told me and will try to follow up on the others.
When did you send an email through c/l? I'm just wondering because I'm the one selling the bike, debating on what I really want to do with it and I don't recall what you mentioned, as only 2 people have replied and I'm waiting for their answers.
I just don't know what time I will have, as my wife is really against me rebuilding/restoring them at this time. I have experience with the 4 stroke mini bikes but not the 2 stroke ones with keys.
LMK and maybe you'll have a better time with these if you're interested in buying them.
Thanks.

I'll see you in about a half hour and whenever items like this come up, I'll talk with you over the phone, to see if you'd be interested in it or if you could help me out with it.
If I do come across another 4 stroke one, that's the one I want to hold onto, as I have more experience with those and I don't have to fumble around with keys/wires.
I hope you have fun fixing it up for your nieces and nephews.
Thank you.

To all other members:
Thank you for your input and I will keep this forum in my favorites and hopefully get more knowledge to this growing hobby. So far, I've been on the site for a few hours and many of you were very helpful through replies and PM's. I look forward to chatting with you all and I look forward to getting back into the 4 stroke engines and having a great community give me tips. If I only knew about this forum years ago......
Thanks again.

I offset the front engine 5/8" outwards,,,,,,,

I stretched the frame between the engines 3"

Made a custom stretched swingarm out of one from an X1 and added 2 rear shocks from a trike front end

I used two 12 tooths on the engines linked and a 16 tooth freewheel hub to the rear wheel.........

ThenI crossdrilled the 12 tooth sprocket and pinned the freewheel to lock them solid and had the shaft drilled and tapped for a M8 screw to keep them tight............
