burning oil in a four stroke.....

6379 Views 23 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  bogieboy
ok so i have noticed that i am burning oil when i rev the engine on my x18... to the point of it looking like a 2 smoker..... what are the common issues here? i could see head gasket (with the cam chain tunnel full of oil right there), valve seals, aor rings being the probable culprits....thoughts? i did pull the head to change the cam, and reused the head gasket....not sure if that makes a difference...i know i should have replaced it, but i didnt....LOL

Crankcase capacity is 800ml which is a tad more than 3/4 of a qt..........make sure to use 10w/40 4t 4 stroke motorcycle engine oil.....

The other possibility is youve already bent a valve or maybe cracked a valve guide....................

i am using 10-40 motorcycle oil....LOLi guess i will be pulling the head next to see whats cracking (no pun intended there) in there...LOL i dont recall the shape of the cylinder...could be worn out rings...which would make it fun to do a BBK.....LOL but i am about at that point where i need to decide how far i want to get into this engine, or go for that 160 i been eyeing...LOL if i need a new head and cyl i think i would be better off just staring over and selling the parts i put into this one...like the cam, and the clutch...LOL

Look up a thread by RoadClam...he put a 155 in his X18....he had many-many fitment issues and after he finally got it running he said it became a real handful of a ride that needed severe suspension upgrades....Be prepared to be into the bike close to over $2k when your done and prepare to take a huge loss if you decide to sell it........

Many-many members here like toomanyminis and CCTXman have done the swap and with-in a few weeks to a few months they drop off the map because theyve listed the bike for sale on craigslist and sold it because the bike required more time and money than thought was needed and the bike wasnt as good as they expected,,,,,,,,Good Luck

LOL i know what i need to do to get these to fit, and i can build just about anything i want...LOL and i can do it cheaper than cheap, because i do it all myself...the engine i am looking at would be about 500, i would extend the swingarm atleast 10", i can do that myself, or make a custom swingarm all together...not terribly hard with the right resources...LOLand yeah..it would be a BEAST.....LOL thats half the point....everything i own has to have some amount of overkill to it....LOL
oh, and the engine i am looking at is only 5/8' longer than a 110, and uses the same mounts....hehehe

Yeah...the only bikes that have real fitment issues on engines over 125cc with the extra length is the X15/19/22 because of the engine undercradle and downtubes...

haha yeah i could see that being a ***** to work around.... i like the open frame layout of the 18....LOL
hey, where is it leaking exactly? out the pipe?
there a few rubber o rings that need to go back in place where the headgasket is, also the torque on the head bolts is 10ftlbs
people stop because it isnt bolt on easy, heck even the easy stuff wasnt so easy, i mean it was, but it was always one thing or another that had to get grinded or moved or drilled...

i dont know...LOL its not dripping any oil, just burning it....so....
maybe you didnt set the lash gap right and oil is going past the valve
trying to think of what you might have done to cause it, if it was fine before the cam swap then its in your work somewhere, maybe the cam itself?
hows your plug look?
There are only a few ways oil can enter the cylinder.

Rings
Head gasket
Valve guides/stem seals

Now you just have to find out which one(s) are causing your problem. If it only happens at idle, and stops when you put the engine under a load, it is most likely the rings. If it happens steadily all the time, then it is one or both of the other two. The best way to find out is to pull the head.
Thanks, now I want to put that 250 twin in my X18, pretty good deal for around $400 total, lol.

Probably gonna end up around a grand total when fully done EPR...You need carbs,,CDI,,rectifier,2 into 1 throttle piece, wiring,, along with exhaust systems to get it running then theres the small stuff that pops up..........

thats kinda what made me think it was a head issue, because its all the time...more when reving, but even at idle....maybe i just need a new gasket....but if i get that, then i may as well go for a new piston and cyl, so i may as well go 114cc...LOL
Complete engine gasket set - $10
Piston/rings/wristpin - $25
Cylinder - $30
Complete cylinder head (w/ valves, etc) - $70
114 BBK (just the gaskets, piston/rings, and cylinder) - $150

GPX 140cc complete engine kit - $400
IMO if it was my bike and was building it to race. I would find out what class i would fit in with the 110cc. Then if that class was appealing enough then i'd go with the fresh rebuild. If that class the 110cc would be racing in is quite small and unappealing. Then i'd do a quick repair and save the money. Then get the motor i really wanted. Building up a 110cc is nice. But it would never compare to the power and feel of the 150cc and 160's. Plus once you get use to the stock big blocks. Then there's always more room to build them up for even more hp.
For me the biggest problem was learning to ride the bike all over again. I couldn't just throw bike around like i did with the 110cc .lol Hence all new and much more suspension mods and things. You will be way more ahead of the game than i was. Cuase you'll be doing the necessary suspension mods and things before hand.
I was only kidding about the 250cc, that engine would probably twist the frame like a pretzel. I have a brand new complete 110cc head to my door $36 it came w/ gaskets, & the 114cc kit, $75 to my door, has gaskets and everything you need but Labor, lol.
Epr if i remember correctly the lifan 200cc only made around 15-16hp. So i don't think that twin is gonna make enough to that kind of damage. Might make 25hp at best, probably would feel torquey as hell. Oh and might rip out the rear sprocket bolts if the chain isn't aligned properly.lol
