I have an MSD wire on my BigRed250 and its been on there over 10 years and its still running strong but thats with a stock XR400 coil.....

You have a higher voltage Nology so Id swap the wire..in all actuality you should be changing the whole coil....Coils have a shelf life as much as a service life...Perf coils for cars are supposed to be changed every 5 years whether they work or not.......
ya i hear ya, my wire has the resistor in it as well so that added to the thought of changing the whole thing, thanks
i guess its done good for 7yrs of mostly abuse
does any one have a link to a site that is selling the boot with coil wire?????
You can get an NGK plug cap for $3.10 at PB Parts in Florida. Go to an Auto store to get your wire, 7 to 8mm 350K per ft works pretty good. Some coil wire unscrew, some don't which make it harder to change over.

It doesnt unscrew?
Yes it unscrus...haha so just get a new wire and cap that's all.... no need for a new "black piece"
It should either unscrew or snap on/off ......
PB Parts in Florida has NGK black caps for $3.10 ea., I got 3 of them & some other stuff cause shipping is exspensive on small orders.
You can use Chev. 90 degree silicon low resistance plug wires, at some stores you can buy hen one at atime. Cut off what you need and screw it on your coil. My avatar bike has 9mm Accell drag bike wire on it, had to cut the first outer layer, and silicon around the out side.
metallic 7mm is large enough??
